Yoo-hoo big summer blow out ☃️

After 7 hr roadtrip, we made it to Hemu Village. There was a car accident on one of the winding mountain roads that extended our 4.5hr drive to 7hrs but alas we made it. With what little day light we had left we sent it to the 吉克普林 (Jikepulin) ski resort (best in the country known for its 12.3km route) but only got one run in before the ski lifts closed for the day.

On the way back, we had to cross 绝望坡 (Despair Hill), a treacherous stretch of road infamous for trapping cars in winter traffic jams. Thankfully, we made it through safely. That evening, the village came alive at the night market, where we joined a fire pit ceremony. Dancing to local folk songs around the flames, we ended the long day on a high note, surrounded by the warmth of the fire and the energy of the crowd. ☃️

Day 3- Haldi🌼 desi haldi with videshi friends 💃

The haldi ceremony is a significant prewedding event and ritual in almost every Indian regional wedding. It is celebrated on the wedding day or one day prior to the wedding day and is usually a close-knitted event. The closest family, relatives and friends come together on this auspicious occasion to apply turmeric paste (haldi) on the bride and groom’s face and body. Some families also smear chandan (sandalwood powder) with rose water on the bride’s face and hands and shower flowers on the couples. The occasion is celebrated with dhol (drum beats), Bollywood songs and endless dancing.

Day 2 - Mehendi - a night full of friendly competition games between bride vs. groom team, Mehendi (aka Henna), good food (I tried PaniPuri!), and of course more dancing 💃🕺Today I also learned that my lucky numbers are 3 and 9 🍀

Traditionally, the Mehendi night is meant to be organized before the wedding to keep the bride’s stress level under control. The green mehendi paste is applied to the hands and feet, which house the nerve endings in the body, to help calm the bride’s nerves. Not only is it considered to bring luck, joy and beauty, its scent also said to have aphrodisiac properties

However, with times and trends - this event is extended to all the ladies in the friends and family circle (and now even the men enjoy this) who come together to get mehendi applied on their hands by professional henna artists as part of ‘getting ready’ for the Big Day that will follow🥰
