She wouldn’t let go. Through crashing waves, against the pull of the ocean, she carried her baby—lifeless but still hers. Day after day, mile after mile, the mother orca pushed forward, the tiny body balanced on her nose. She had waited for this calf. Felt it grow inside her. Dreamed of the moment it would swim beside her, strong and full of life. But the moment never came. The baby was born, took a few breaths, and then… nothing.
She nudged it. Waited. No response.
Still, she refused to leave it behind. When the waves pulled it under, she dived deep, bringing it back to the surface. Again and again.
Boats followed at a distance. Scientists whispered to each other, tracking her every move. People on the shore watched, some with tears in their eyes. The world had seen this before—six years ago, she had done the same thing. Seventeen days of grief. A thousand miles of mourning.
And now, she was doing it again.
The other orcas swam with her, circling close, as if they understood. Maybe they did. But the ocean doesn’t stop for grief.
Her strength began to fade. The baby slipped from her nose, sinking slowly into the dark water. She dived after it, but this time, she didn’t bring it back.
She surfaced alone. Took a deep breath.
And swam forward.
