A powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake rocked extensive swaths of Turkey and Syria early Monday, toppling hundreds of buildings and killing greater than 2,300 people. Hundreds were still believed to be trapped under rubble, and the toll used to be anticipated to rise as rescue workers searched mounds of wreckage in cities and towns throughout the area.
The US Geological Survey said the quake, one of the strongest to hit the region in more than 100 years, occurred 23 kilometers (14.2 miles) east of Nordağı in Turkey's Gaziantep province, at a depth of 24.1 kilometers (14.9 miles).
There are 15,000 rescue personnel working in the region, and due to the bad weather, they are using helicopters and planes to reach the earthquake locations.
At least 2,834 buildings have been damaged, and the authorities are working to provide citizens with shelter at night.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken expressed his "deep sorrow at the tragic loss of life and destruction" in Turkey and Syria due to the earthquake.

Two people died and four others were injured in a shootout in Ocala, Florida, early Sunday, according to officials.
Gunfire broke out around 4:30 a.m. near the 1600 block of Southwest 5th Street, in an area where a crowd of about 100 people were gathered, police said in a news release.
Davonta Harris, 30, and Abdul Hakeem Van Croskey, 24, were identified by the police as the two people killed. Four other victims, whose names were not released, were in stable condition.
“Detectives are investigating the crime and are working diligently to determine the facts behind the fatal shooting and are actively working on leads,” Ocala police said.
“The tragic event has left many devastated and mourning. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those affected by this terrible act,” police said.
A few hours earlier, a New Year’s Eve shooting left a 24-year-old dead and nine others injured in Mobile, Alabama, police said. The shooting happened just blocks from where people had gathered for the city’s New Year’s Eve celebration.

A Michigan doctor who was reported missing on Christmas Eve was found dead Tuesday after a dive team searched a frozen pond near his home.
Bulek Payan was last seen leaving Henry Ford Elegance Health Hospital in Jackson last Thursday, Blackman told Leonie Public Safety. His car was found at his home, but he has not returned to work and has not called his friends or family.
Authorities said Tuesday that Payan was seen leaving his home on foot after investigators gained access to the password-protected security system.
A search of the area, which involved the use of sniffer dogs and drones, yielded no results.
Payan was found by the Jackson County Dive Team after he punched holes in the surface of a frozen pond on his property to search the waters. The Jackson County Medical Examiner's Office is performing the autopsy.
“Investigators believe Dr Payan was dead prior to the time he was reported missing, due to weather conditions on the day he left his residence and the fact that he was in the water,” Blackman Leonie told Public Safety.
Michigan was among a slew of states hit by a winter storm that brought freezing temperatures, high winds and torrential rain.
Bayan was an osteopath and board-certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, according to his bio with Henry Ford Health.
He studied at the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine and did his psychiatry residency at Henry Ford Allegiance Health.

Ali Spice, a former Hooters girl who garnered almost a million followers on TikTok, died with two other friends when a wrong-way driver plowed into their car on State Road 44 near DeLand early Sunday, friends and family said on Tuesday.
