Self-described as a “vessel,” Deron Johnson continually seeks out fellow players who feel music flowing through them like water. On “Call Me Back,” that’s channeled through the gravelly voice of an answering machine from the Prince of Darkness himself. Contrasting the trumpeter’s tinny vocals, the jam soars into the highest end of improvised electronic jazz-funk. Johnson pulls quadruple duty on moody piano, grooving synth bass, tumbling drum fills, and sci-fi synths. His guests on this voyage are drummer Mark Guiliana and trumpeter Joey Curreri, careening through the clatter with clusters of notes that sound like a familiar voice calling. “I’m just checkin’ on your ass...”
