Mayor Eric Garcetti was one of a dozen local and state leaders who attended a rally for “No on the Recall” of Governor Gavin Newsom, held by the Los Angeles Federation of Labor in downtown Los Angeles on Aug. 7.
Garcetti spoke to hundreds of assembled members from different local unions about how Newsom reflects California’s values and that during the pandemic, “while other states waited, while other leaders blamed and demonized the masks and now vaccines, Gavin Newsom led.”
The recall election is on Sept. 14. The deadline to register to vote is on Aug. 30. Learn more at registertovote.ca.gov.
As lockdowns lift throughout Southern California, live performances are starting to return. If you’re looking for a COVID-safe event, check out @summerswingnights drive-in event on June 12 at El Camino College in Torrance.
Now in its fourth year, Summer Swing Nights: Drive-In Edition features live vocal jazz by the Original Swing Tones accompanied by a seven-piece big band and @laswingdanceposse.
The group is the brainchild of SoCal Jewish musical performer and entrepreneur Aaron Jacobs who lives in Granada Hills. He told SoCal Jewish News, “I’m excited to have live dance performances again and to sing and to be on stage.”
Jacobs, who also was a founding member of @JQIntll, said while he has coordinated events in the past, he’s proud of the magnitude of this event. Attendees will be able to enjoy songs from The Andrews Sisters, The Manhattan Transfer, Ella Fitzgerald and The Temptations, alongside jazz-style renditions of modern hits.
There are seven singers in the Summer Swing Tones. Along with Jacobs, two others are Jewish: Devyn Kontur and SoCal Jewish News’ Erin Ben-Moche.
Said Kontur, “After a year of just singing in front of a ring light and my iPhone, it is going to be so amazing to look out and see real people and get a live reaction from them. I definitely think [it] will be a very emotional night for me.”
Summer Swing Nights Drive-in Concert takes place June 12 at El Camino College, 16007 Crenshaw Blvd., Torrance, CA 90506 from 8-10 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online at www.ssn2021.com or in person at the venue.
