Alexandria was among the largest and most magnificent cities in antiquity

Before the foundation of Alexandria in 331 BC, the city knew glorious times as the obligatory port of entry to Egypt for all ships coming from the Greek world.

Due to a combination of natural phenomena, including a series of earthquakes and tidal waves, the Portus Magnus and parts of the city’s ancient coastline sank beneath the sea.

In 1992, the IEASM began underwater explorations under the supervision of Franck Goddio and in cooperation with the Egyptian Supreme Council of Antiquities. The zone of research covers the current eastern port, which measures approximately 400 hectares in area. The archaeological campaigns have made it possible to develop, for the first time, a complete panorama of the famous Portus Magnus.

“An illustrated cultural guide to the archaeological site of Amarna, the best-preserved pharaonic city in Egypt.

Around three thousand years ago, the pharaoh Akhenaten turned his back on Amun, and most of the great gods of Egypt. Abandoning Thebes, he quickly built a grand new city in Middle Egypt, Akhetaten―Horizon of the Aten―devoted exclusively to the sun god Aten.

Huge open-air temples served the cult of Aten, while palaces were decorated with painted pavements and inlaid wall reliefs. Akhenaten created a new royal burial ground deep in a desert valley, and his officials built elaborate tombs decorated with scenes of the king and his city.

As thousands of people moved to Akhetaten, it became the most important city in Egypt. But it was not to last. Akhenaten’s death brought the abandonment of his city and an end to one of the most startling episodes in Egyptian history.

Today, Akhetaten is known as Amarna, a sprawling archaeological site in the province of Minya, halfway between Cairo and Luxor. With its beautifully decorated tombs and vast mud-brick ruins, it is the best-preserved pharaonic city in Egypt.

This informed and richly illustrated guidebook brings the ancient city of Akhetaten alive with a keen insider’s eye, drawing on ongoing archaeological research and the knowledge and insight of Amarna’s modern-day communities and caretakers to explain key monuments and events, while offering invaluable practical advice for visiting the site.

With over 150 illustrations, maps, and plans, Amarna is both an ideal introduction for visitors to Amarna and a window onto the extraordinary reign of Akhenaten.”

The mummified remains of king Amenhotep II

Amenhotep II was the son of king Thutmose III, father of king Thutmose IV and grandfather of Amenhotep III. Amenhotep II was the 7th king of Egypt"s 18th Dynasty (c. 1427–1401 B.C. or c. 1427–1397 B.C.).

The French excavator Victor Loret found the mummy of Amenhotep II in 1898, still resting in his own sarcophagus in his tomb (KV35) in the Valley of the Kings.

At that time, before the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun, he was the only king whose mummy had survived the vicissitudes of continued robbery and defilement and remained in his own sarcophagus in his own tomb.

In 1907, Sir Grafton Elliot Smith analysed the mummy of the king, discovering the king had small bumps upon his skin, he was unsure if this was due to the mummification process or a disease or condition the king was suffering with, these bumps are still visible today. Smith also noted the king bore a strong resemblance to the mummy of his son, king Thutmose IV.

“The King was middle-aged when he died; his mummy has wavy brown hair that has started to turn grey.”
- Chronicle of a Pharaoh, The Intimate Life of Amenhotep III, Dr. Joann Fletcher, 2000.

Michelangelo Buonarotti was only 23 years old when he created the famous Pietà. A French cardinal commissioned the work and it took Michelangelo only two years to complete (1498-1500). It was made from a single block of Carrara marble and it's the only sculpture the artist ever signed.
