Another one of Harry’s claims of credibility is that he located the remains of Scott Spansel Jr. in 2005. Just like in many of his reports, Harry claims police “did nothing,” and their search dogs “failed to find anything.” He also bizarrely (and falsely) states that Scott’s remains surfaced in front of the young teen’s mother after law enforcement ignored his report.

Scott Spansel Jr. was a 15 year old teenager who went missing on the evening of Saturday, June 18, 2005. He had been drinking alcohol with friends at a local park in his community. The park had one large pond and two small ponds. Initially, family members searched for Scott on their own. It was when his family found Scott’s broken glasses and one of his shoes floating in one of the smaller ponds (the other shoe on the edge of the water) that they called 911 on the afternoon of Sunday June 19th. Since his shoes were found near one of the small ponds, that is where the first initial search efforts were focused. By Monday June 20th they searched the park for more clues, drained the pond his shoes were found in to a depth of 5ft and used underwater cameras & other tools to search. By the end of the day, they felt confident that Scott was not in the small pond where his shoe was found floating. By Tuesday June 20th, detectives were assigned to investigate the case. They spent Tuesday retracing steps and re-interviewing witnesses. They spent Wednesday conducting more interviews and were searching near the large pond for evidence. On Thursday June 23rd, Scott’s body was found floating in the pond by a woman labeled as a random citizen of Salem named Tammy Jordan. His remains did not emerge in front of his mother.

Harry searched the area on June 21st. According to Det. Jake Burke, Harry volunteered his services which Burke accepted, but Harry came that same day after law enforcement had left, rather than waiting until the following day to meet & search as asked. By the time Harry brought his dogs to search, police had already had shifted their search focus to the large pond after re-interviewing witnesses.

Some of Harry’s reports state Scott’s body emerged 3 inches from his flagging in the pond; some reports state it was 3 feet from his flagging. Pretty interesting for there to be discrepancies for someone who also claims to keep immaculate records. Scott’s body did not emerge in front of his crying mother as Harry states.

Harry Oakes has shared this picture several times on his facebook, in his book, and blogs online. He claims this is hair he discovered of missing Carolyn Killaby. According to his Flickr account, the photo was taken in September of 2004. He recently shared this photo and stated that the hair was DNA tested & confirmed to be the victim’s (Carolyn’s).

Case file info:
“11-15-04 2004-3243-243(E). Clark. Co. Wash. Carolyn Killaby Search. Team: H. Oakes SAR Dog Valorie K-9-1. M. Keating SAR Dog Yogi K-9-2. Results; Found some human remains. (Victim’s hair).”
(Direct Copy/paste from his website k9sardog.com)

Carolyn Ruth Killaby went missing in 1995. Tragically, to this day, her remains have never been located. It is one of Washington State’s biggest, most infamous missing persons/no body cases.

Carolyn was beautiful with long brown hair. She was only 34 years old. Why are these hair strands pure grey? Why wasn’t this discovery ever reported by the news? Why isn’t there a case or police report with the local law enforcement agency regarding these hair strands?

Until recent years (and breakthrough technological advancements in science), DNA testing on hair was nearly impossible. The only way to get DNA from hair strands was if the hair had a root/follicle attached. This is extremely rare. In 2004, the available technology more than likely would not have been capable of DNA testing these hair strands. This is the same reason why the hair found in Casey Anthony’s trunk could not be proven to be Caylee Anthony’s hair or not in 2008.

Now, Harry really does go out searching. But why does he feel the need to embellish or lie about his findings? He complains about “political BS” and “Harry Haters” who call him out, when in reality anyone can poke holes through so many of his claims of credibility just by fact checking. If he didn’t lie or change his stories so much, maybe he would actually have credibility. However, can you really trust someone who has no regard for the truth all to make himself look better? How can anyone take Harry’s word when Harry’s word changes depending where you look? 🤔

He briefly mentions he testified in her case, I am assuming he means at the trial for her murder. Awaiting the case file to confirm if this is true or not. Stay tuned!

The unidentified Jane Doe - a long one!

Harry Oakes claims to have found a “third unidentified body” during his search around Weaver’s home after Ashley Pond & Miranda Gaddis were taken in 2002. He states in his book, “I’m convinced the third victim was killed by Ward Weaver and or his son.”

Harry claims that after he was done searching Weaver’s property, he “wanted to continue (his) search to see if there were more victims than just the two that we already located” (direct quote from book/report) so he came back the next day for more searching. This is reported in his book/report as occurring on 3/17/2002 & he reported finding the “third unidentified body” on 3/20/2002.

When Harry says “third unidentified body,” what he really means is “two FRESH femur bones” (direct quote from book/report) and 2 strands of human hair. He states he turned these in to the local law enforcement but they did not care nor credit him for his discovery. I wonder why he calls this person Jane Doe if only 2 femur bones were found..

Incidentally, between 4/21/02-4/23/02, local newspapers reported of discovered skeletal human remains found by volunteers searching the area for evidence related to the disappearance of Ashley Pond & Miranda Gaddis. They quickly announced the remains had been there for 1-2 years, were unrelated to Ashley/Miranda, and a separate investigation would be launched. Sadly, despite an investigation by police including dna analysis and several potential leads/witnesses cooperating with the investigation, this person remains listed on the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs) as an unidentified person.

According to official public record of that investigation, on 4/20/2002, near complete skeletal human remains were found by volunteer searchers looking for evidence related to Ashley Pond & Miranda Gaddis. These volunteer searchers were identified by full name as witnesses. Several officers & volunteers returned to the area on 4/21/02 to retrieve the remains and search for related evidence. These additional volunteer searchers were also identified by full name. The public record police case file for this incident is 88 pages long and includes reports from several agencies.

If Harry had found human remains (two femur bones) and turned them into police as he states, why is there no case number or investigation with the police department? If he found only two femur bones, how did he find out it was a Jane Doe? Why isn’t this Jane Doe listed on the National Unidentified Persons System?
If the two bones Harry claims to have discovered were in some way related to the remains found on 4/20/02, why wasn’t Harry named as a witness, nor any details of the bones being turned in to police reported in their extensive investigation? If the bones Harry discovered were unrelated, why wouldn’t there be a case number or investigation, if the the police thoroughly investigated the remains found on 4/20/02? Is it believable that police would investigate one set of remains, but not the femurs Harry claims to have found just one month prior in the same area? Why didn’t Harry leave the remains where they were found and call police in to investigate a potential crime scene, as the other witnesses had when they discovered the remains on 4/20/02? Questions that make you go “hmm…”

Here are a few screenshots of Harry’s statements related to the “third unidentified body,” as well as the first 2 pages of the case file related to the John Doe found on 4/20/02. Although this is public information, the private information of the witnesses who discovered the remains have been redacted out of respect for their privacy. If there is any interest to read the full report, I can upload the remaining 86 pages and link it in the comments below.

Harry Oakes has stated several times that his dog alerted “where the cement met the grass” in the back of Ward Weaver’s property when looking for Ashley Pond & Miranda Gaddis.

Photos of Ward Weaver’s backyard and the concrete slab he poured in 3/2002 show a different picture- the house had an existing cement pathway that went from a back door and up a few steps. The existing path was surrounded by gravel, and then lawn. Where in these photos do you see the new cement slab meet any grass? Or even the existing cement walkway?

One of Harry Oakes’ favorite claims to fame is that he discovered the bodies of Ashley Pond, Miranda Gaddis, and a third unidentified Jane Doe in March of 2002.

Harry likes to use this NBC article as proof/creditability for his claims. The article also interviews author/private investigator Linda O’Neal regarding her book she wrote on the case (which is also heavily criticized). What’s interesting is Linda’s book has a completely different account of what supposedly happened when Harry Oakes searched Ward Weaver’s property in 2002. The book says Ashley’s family gave kneehigh socks as a scent article. Harry’s official report states it was a pillow case and backpack of Ashley’s he used. Not to mention, the article & the book never mentions Harry searching the shed. That detail has been added over time… Hmm, interesting.

As it turns out, Harry Oakes himself has shared several different versions of what he claimed happened in March 2002. Some versions, there is no mention of the death alert in the hallway. Some versions, he states the dog alerted to the freezer and that’s where he reported Miranda was (not the shed). Here are a few screenshots of those variations…

As for the unidentified Jane Doe that he also has claimed to have discovered during this time; this is certainly another lie; more to come on that later!
