The African American and Ojibwe sculptor Edmonia Lewis - best known for her iconic Forever Free - was one of a remarkable group of American women sculptors working in mid-19th century Rome. Dubbed 'the White Marmorean Flock' by novelists Nathaniel Hawthorne and Henry James, the group also included Margaret Foley, Anne Whitney and Harriet Hosmer.

Join this event to hear Charmaine Nelson, Provost Professor, Black Diasporic Art and Visual Culture, University of Massachusetts Amherst and Ramey Mize, Assistant Curator of American Art, Portland Museum of Art, discussing these women, what drew them to Rome, and their legacy for women artists of succeeding generations.

Sometimes people put their foot in their mouth and sometimes they shove that foot down their throat. Well, we have a glaring case of foot-in-mouth or shoe-in-poop syndrome to report. Yes, this guy really stepped in it. Who are we referring to? Why, Jann Wenner, the 77-year-old editorial director of Wenner Media and co-founder of Rolling Stone Magazine, long considered the bible of Rock and Roll music. In a recent 15 September 2023 New York Times interview entitled “Jann Wenner Defends his Legacy and his Generation’s” intended to promote his new book, The Masters, in which he republished interviews with a conspicuously white and male group of musicians, Werner spoke about why his magazine had so rarely celebrated and promoted the music and accomplishments of black and female musicians.

Directed by the acclaimed Greta Gerwig, and written by Gerwig and Noah Baumbach, Barbie appeared in theatres at the same time as Oppenheimer, the film about one of the physicists who was central to the invention of the atomic bomb. Whether this demonstrates the split psyche of America or the immense diversity of Hollywood, we’re not certain, but we are sure that Barbie – the doll, ideal, icon, and movie – are worthy of contemplation.

- Adam Harris Levine is Associate Curator of European Art at the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto, Ontario. Originally from Long Island, New York, Adam holds degrees from McGill University (Montreal), the Courtauld Institute (London, England), and Columbia University (New York). He is currently finalizing his doctoral dissertation at Columbia University, where he has also taught extensively. Levine’s area of specialty is medieval and renaissance sculpture and decorative arts.
