NATURAL BRIDGE ZOO UPDATE:

Zeus was killed by the Animal Law Unit's raid team today.

The beloved tiger was popular with zoo staff and guests alike. He was 12 years old and was born at the zoo. Zeus was under vet care and was supposed to get his welfare check today by his attending veterinarian. Instead, the raid occurred. Dr. Ernesto Dominguez ordered Gretchen Mogensen to let Zeus out of his den into his yard area. Gretchen did not want to do this with the other tiger in her yard. Dr. Dominguez insisted. She let Zeus out and the female immediately started attacking the dividing fence.

The raid team allowed Gretchen to be present for the euthanasia. She could have sedated Zeus easily herself, but was not permitted to do so. Instead, she watched the raid vet jab him three different times. It was an agonizing process and it took approximately 20 minutes for the giant cat to go down. (In contrast, the zoo's sedative would have taken 5 minutes or less.) Gretchen was with Zeus when he was born and hated to watch him die this way at the hands of strangers. Authorities would not let her have his body to bury him at home.

The Animal Law Unit did NOT allow any of the zoo animals to receive their normal routine of feed, water, and care. Staff were not allowed into the zoo for hours. Critical animals with special care needs did not garner any more empathy. When the decision was made to finally allow staff into the zoo later in the afternoon to feed and water, each staff member was accompanied by an officer. They had to rush to feed everything before dark. Animals that would normally get two feedings a day, were only able to be fed once. The keepers did their best with the situation they were given.

Gretchen was eventually ordered off the property. After dark, the raid team started confiscating animals. They set up giant stadium lights in the back of the park that are run by generators. This only adds to the stress the animals have already been put through today and is especially detrimental to animals that only feed at night.

Don't fall for the lie that the Animal Law Unit exists for animal welfare. The actions of their raid team speak louder than any of their words.
