August is National Immunization Awareness Month! Just like us, it’s important for our pets to stay on top of their vaccines and immunizations.

Giving your pets their regular vaccinations is the key to a long and healthy life. Regardless of whether you keep your dog inside or not, vaccines are essential in ensuring your pet’s health.

Many contagious diseases can be airborne, meaning your pet could contract a disease through an open window. Pets are also prone to slipping out of the house on occasion, which could lead to risk of disease.

Additionally, places you may frequently visit such as boarding kennels, dog parks and grooming salons are high-risk environments.

Making sure your pet is vaccinated before visiting such places can give you peace of mind. Remember that vaccinations can take a few days to a few weeks before becoming effective – check with your vet before taking your recently vaccinated pet to any of these places!

Today is International Cat Day! 🐱🐱🐱

Here are some ways to raise awareness for cats:

Adopt: Consider adopting a cat from a shelter or rescue organization instead of shopping. Adopting a cat makes room for another animal in need.

Support brands: Buy products from companies that support animal welfare organizations.

Volunteer and donate: Donate or volunteer your time to local animal shelters and rescue groups.

Use social media: Use social media platforms to raise awareness about animal welfare and cat adoption.

❗️ TRIGGER WARNING ❗️

PYOMETRA - One of the most common emergencies is a condition called pyometra. As intact female dogs age, the hormones during each heat cycle change the uterus. These changes make the uterus especially prone to developing infection and quite poor at fighting off infection.

The best and only prevention for pyometra is to have your dog SPAYED. Spaying removes the hormonal stimulation that causes both heat cycles and the uterine changes that allow pyometra to happen.

The photo on the left is a normal size uterus, the one on the right is a pyometra.

🐾Do you have a hairy Houdini? 🐾
Repeat attempts to keep your pet confined to the yard may be frustrating, but every escape opens up the possibility of TRAGIC CONSEQUENCES.

• SO WHY DOES MY DOG ESCAPE? •

✨Social isolation / Frustration ✨
Your dog may be escaping because they are bored and lonely, especially if:
•They are left alone for long periods of time without opportunities for interaction with you.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
✨Expand your dog's world and increasing their "people time" in the following ways✨
•Walk your dog daily.
•Teach your dog to fetch a ball or Frisbee™

•SEXUAL ROAMING•
✨Dogs become sexually mature at around 6 months of age & have a strong drive to seek out females if intact.✨
RECOMMENDATIONS:
•Have your dogs spayed/neutered.

AND HERE ARE A FEW MORE OTHER FACTORS WHY YOUR DOG MIGHT BE ESCAPING:
•Fears and phobias
•Separation anxiety

🐾 May 20th is National Rescue Dog Day🐾

National Rescue Dog Day was founded by Lisa Wiehebrink of Tails That Teach to bring awareness to the countless number of amazing dogs in shelters waiting to be adopted, to promote humane education for young children, and to encourage spay/neuter. The day was inspired by Cooper (pictured below) who was rescued in 2009 and now the main character in the Tails That Teach book series that teach children how to be and kind and gentle to their pets.

How to observe:
Get involved in the lives of rescue dogs! There are a variety of ways to share the puppy love…

ADOPT: If there is room in your life for a dog, consider adopting and giving one a forever home.

FOSTER: Many dogs abandoned to shelters benefit from socialization, or would just thrive better away from the shelter environment. Others may be in need of some medical care or rehabilitation in a home setting before an adoption can take place.

HELP A SHELTER: Shelters always need support. In addition to financial donations, shelters have a list of much needed items such as blankets, toys, treats, and leashes. You can also host a bake sale, car wash, or other event to raise funds for the shelter.

VOLUNTEER: Help out at your local shelter. Taking dogs for walks, grooming, and giving them plenty of affection improves their socialization.

SPAY/NEUTER: Be responsible for your pets. Overpopulation is the number one reason shelters exist.

EDUCATE: Teach young children the importance of kindness, unconditional love, and responsible care of all animals.

May is National Chip Your Pet Month, which serves as an important reminder to have your pets microchipped if you haven’t already. Microchips help increase the chance of being reunited with lost pets. 🐾

•Benefits of Microchips•
Microchips offer another way for other people to contact you if they find your lost pets. Although your pets might wear collars with ID tags, these collars can fall off or break. Having a microchip means that your pets can be brought to a clinic or shelter that has the right scanning device for these implants.

•Where to Get Microchips•
Veterinary clinics usually provide microchipping services and Laredo Animal Care Services 5202 Maher Ave. Expect to pay a small fee.

Microchips offer important benefits, but they shouldn’t replace ID tags. Making sure that your pets have both ID tags and microchips gives them the best chance of being returned to you if they get lost.

🌷🐾Happy National Dog Mom’s Day🐾🌷

A day for all pup-loving women across the country to celebrate their special kind of motherhood.

We adopt them as puppies, adolescents, or fully mature with a bit of baggage, and yet, we find common ground, a connection, and a bond women share. When they humor us, charm us or even when they are naughty, they are like any other child to us.

Celebrate by making sure to get some extra cuddles. Bake up some yummy homemade puppy treats. Plan for some double pampering – a pedicure for you and paws for the puppers .

Then take an extra special selfie with your fur baby to mark the occasion, and post below.

Adopt a Shelter Pet Day is celebrated nationwide on April 30. However it will land on a Sunday, and shelters will be closed. We are encouraging everyone to observe this day by going to our two local pet shelters when they open, to adopt a pet, and if you cannot adopt right now please help by spreading the word.
•Laredo Animal Care Services - 5202 Maher Ave.
•Laredo Animal Protective Society -2500 Gonzalez St.

Did you know, every year, in the United States alone, about 6.5 million animals enter animal shelters?
•Euthanasia due to lack of accommodation: Pet shelters are in severe shortage and annually, more than 1.5 million animals are killed, including 670,000 dogs and 860,000 cats.

Everyone’s joint efforts can help pets have a home of their own.

☀️Friendly Reminder☀️

The HEAT has arrived to Laredo!
Scorching surfaces are damaging to dogs paws, especially to puppies with sensitive young paws. Pavement, like asphalt or artificial grass, can become incredibly hot and cause discomfort, blisters, and burn a dog’s paw pad! 😩

So how hot is too hot for a dog's paw pads?
•If the temperature is 85 degrees or over without the chance for the pavement to cool down, the ground may be too hot for safely walking a dog.

•According to data reported by the Journal of the American Medical Association, when the air temperature is 86 degrees, the asphalt temperature registers 135 degrees.

•To find out if the ground is too hot for your dog to walk on, place your hand comfortably on the pavement for 10 seconds. If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for your dog’s paws.

Today is Little Pampered Dog Day 🐾

Many people show their affection towards their loved ones by pampering them, dogs included. Some people pamper their dogs by taking them places, dressing them up in cute outfits, and simply giving them the love they deserve. However, there are many dogs that do not get to celebrate this holiday. This holiday was created for three main reasons. Firstly, to celebrate the owners that truly care and love their dogs unconditionally. Secondly, to bring attention to the dogs that do not get the love and attention they deserve. Thirdly, to spread the word that dogs deserve to be happy and healthy just as much as their owners do.

1. Spread the word on social media about your pampered pooch. Don’t forget to be creative in how you spoil your dog!

2. Photos can be used to highlight the many dogs that are in need of forever home, If you have a rescue dog, you can also use the pictures to show the effects of saving a dog and how happy they are after being adopted.

3. Many animal shelters and animal rescues are in desperate need of volunteers. Giving your time and affection to these dogs can go a long way in the lives of the dogs and even help your local community as well.

4. You don’t have to wait until April 27th to pamper your dog! This holiday can be celebrated every day all year round to truly show your dog how much they mean to you.

Today is National Kids & Pets Day ❤️👧🏻👦🏼🐾
It is dedicated to furthering the magical bond between children and animals, to help bring awareness to the plight of pets in shelters awaiting new homes and educating the public about safety between children and pets. "The future of our children and their ability to show compassion toward animals and each other, depends on us, to give them the skills necessary to make the world a better, kinder place to live.” Children with learning disabilities can greatly increase academic success reading to pets and pets help shy children to open up and feel more confident.

The responsibility that a child can learn from caring for a pet is vital in their social development. Children that grow up with pets tend to be extremely nurturing and compassionate, making dedicated and loving parents and pet owners themselves. This, in turn, simply makes for a happier world. And who doesn't want that?

National Kids and Pets Day encourages parents to never leave small children alone with dogs and cats and other animals that have the potential to cause them harm. Thousands of children a year are either injured or killed by family pets. Often these tragic events can be avoided. Millions of orphaned pets sit in shelters awaiting new homes. But be sure that your child and family are ready for a new pet.
Celebrate your kids and pets... today, tomorrow and every day!

‼️ A T T E N T I O N ‼️
Puppies require three sets of vaccines to properly prepare their little bodies to fight off the contagious and deadly diseases, out in that big new world!!
They SHOULD receive their first set of vaccines at 8 weeks of age, then again at 12 and 16 weeks of age for two more rounds.

‼️IF THEY ARE NOT VACCINATED OR ARE MISSING VACCINES THEY ARE NOT SAFE, and should be kept away from PUBLIC AREAS like PARKS etc.

•Parvo- Canine parvovirus is a highly contagious virus that can affect all dogs, but unvaccinated dogs and puppies younger than four months old are the most at risk.

•Distemper- Canine distemper is a contagious and serious disease caused by a virus that attacks the respiratory, gastrointestinal and nervous systems of puppies and dogs.

The diseases above can be fatal, and not to mention costly to treat and sometimes treatment will not work, the cost of vaccines is less. Be a responsible pet parent vaccinate your puppies. 🐶

🐾March is Poison Prevention Month. 🐾
It was established to help raise awareness and prevent illness and injuries for pets.
Pets may become very ill after ingesting many common household foods, products, and plants; a thorough inspection of your home can help reduce the risk. Instinctively, pets are curious creatures—particularly cats and if a partially empty container with cleaner, alcohol, medications, etc. is left out, your pet may “investigate.”

•Symptoms of accidental poisoning•
Drooling, vomiting, loss of appetite, diarrhea
Lethargy, weakness, Pale or yellowish gums Excessive thirst or urination, Nervousness, hyperactivity, muscle tremors, seizures, coma.
•If you witness your pet ingesting something he/she should not be, safely collect the materials involved. When seeking veterinary care, bring the product’s container with you, this can be helpful for veterinary professionals treating your pet.

It is our hope that a little prevention and planning will reduce the number of pets accidently poisoned each year.

🛑 CANINE D I S T E M P E R 🛑
Please be aware that Canine Distemper can be fatal and is Highly Contagious. It affects dogs and can damage their nervous system and respiratory system.

•How dangerous is CD?
Distemper has a high mortality rate in UN-TREATED dogs. Dogs who are UN-VACCINATED are at risk of CD.

•What are the Symptoms?
Dogs with CD have a wide range of symptoms depending on their immunity, and stage of disease. Common Symptoms: Cough, Nasal and Eye Discharge, Lethargy, Body Twitching, Seizures, Neurological Dis-Coordination, Inappetence, Dehydration, Vomiting, Diarrhea.

•Is CD curable?
Though there is no precise medication available for CD, with supportive medication, secondary infections can be prevented. Treatment can reduce symptoms and intensity of the condition.

•How is CD spread?
Airborne exposure - through sneezing, coughing of affected animal. Consult with your vet if you notice any of the above mentioned.

• VACCINATING YOUR DOGS IS KEY! MAKE SURE THEY HAVE THE DHPP VACCINE TO PREVENT CANINE DISTEMPER. Get more information from your vet.

City of Laredo Prohibits owners with their pets on the bed of their pick-up truck.

Laredo, TX. - The proposal to ban pick-up trucks with pets on the back came into effect August 2019. All pets must be transported in a Pet Kennel or Cage that fits their needs, in order to protect them from the sun's rays and ensure a safe trip. If seen not following City Ordinance you will get fined. It doesn’t matter if your dog is “trained” or a ranch dog - however accidents may happen while driving, so please follow safety precautions.

Laredo PD - please make sure we are enforcing this proposal that was granted by City Council, as we have had issues in the past.

PSA!!

PLEASE CHECK UNDER YOUR CARS for community cats seeking shade in the summer!

Most of the country is in an oven right now with no relief in sight.

Community cats may hide out under your car for shade, especially if they’re in an area without a lot of shady spots. Our property has a lot of trees and shade and the Yard Cats are still seeking shade under the Jeep.

Be sure to check under your car before going anywhere, even if you just popped into the store for five minutes. Doing so may just save a life. ♥️

PS..The cat in the picture is our very own Domino aka Dom Juan, who was under my Jeep rather than the hundreds of shady spots on our property.
