Ep. 69 is live! And we’re interviewing . 🙌🏽 We discuss Qacung’s familial background and explore a bit of his current work in language and art practices.

Qacung is an Alaskan performing artist, a culture-bearer, art and culture educator, and advocate for equity and inclusion. He is a global citizen whose Yup’ik roots guide his leadership and artistic vision. Early on in his nearly 30-year career, he realized his passion to teach the beautiful songs and dances of his culture.

Much of Qacung’s work is inspired by a quote by author Vine Deloria, “Being born Native is like being born into politics.” As an Alaska Native, he is passionate about his responsibility to fight for his traditions and heritage. In addition to his music and dance performances, he also teaches and perpetuates the Alaska Native traditions and is an advocate for equity and inclusion in the arts and culture industry.

Ashton Pemapanik Dunkley is a Nanticoke Lenni-Lenape and Jamaican model and Ph.D. candidate from the University of Minnesota's American Studies Department. Her people are from the Nanticoke and Lenape nations of so-called Delaware and New Jersey (more accurately, Lenapehoking) & the island of Jamaica.

She considers herself an Afro-Indigenous Feminist, often thinking about the intimate and embodied connections between Black, Native, and Black-Native peoples (especially her grandmothers).

Ep. 66 is now live! 🗣 We had the privilege of interviewing Poodeezy, and it’s a show you don’t want to miss. Listen now on Spotify and Apple Podcasts.

Poodeezy aka Trap Native is an artist out of San Diego, Ca and a member of the Sycuan band of the Kumeyaay Nation.

With laid back raps and chill tones Poodeezy showcases versatility on every track. Often touching upon life on the reservation along with the struggles and perks that come with it, Poodeezy’s music is a direct representation of what he calls a “Trap Native”

Being born and residing in Bakersfield Ca up until the age of 10 Poodeezy has been exposed to both street and Rez living. This is what contributes to the raw street sound of his music.

Poodeezy has been on 4 North American tours and is a Native American music award winner. He has also collaborated with many other artists including Nipsey Hussle, j Diggs, Riff Raff and more.

🎵So no one told you life was gonna be this way 👏🏾👏🏽👏🏿👏🏾🎵

Check out this extended preview of co-hosts Kellen and Mikailah discussing the that aired recently. In our talk, we ponder just exactly WHO the Friends franchise is meant for. 🎵I’ll be there for WHO(m)?!🎵🤔🤨

By the absolute lack of diversity and representation within the series itself, we’re left wondering whether it’s at all meant for us as Black and Native people.

These words don't need a caption really. The thing we keep coming back to is HOW-- How many others feel similarly? How can we help others to process these experiences? How can we avoid these experiences altogether?

05/30/2021

Spirituality and religion were huge topics that we took on as a team in our very early discussions. And as you can assume, it isn’t hard for a conversation like this to dive deep in a short amount of time. We’re looking forward to sharing the full context of this discussion soon!
