From the Kokomo Police Department, updated with toxicology results:

Fatal Injury Motor Vehicle Accident
On July 13, 2023, at approximately 11:27p.m., officers of the Kokomo Police Department were dispatched to a fatal injury motor vehicle accident at State Road 26 and Council Ring Boulevard.

After receiving the certified toxicology reports from the drivers involved in this collision and reviewing the evidence at the scene, the Kokomo Police Department Accident Investigation Division has concluded the following:

After reconstructing the accident and reviewing evidence, it was determined Allen Durham was driving a brown 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee eastbound on State Road 26. Durham was slowing down to turn northbound onto Council Ring Boulevard.

A 17-year-old female driver was operating a gray 2010 Dodge Caravan behind Durham, also traveling eastbound on State Road 26. For an unknown reason, the 17-year-old driver did not see or anticipate Durham slowing down and quickly swerved to the south and struck the right rear of Durham's Jeep. This collision caused Durham's Jeep to be pushed into the westbound traffic lane.

At the same time, Reese Hendershot was traveling westbound on State Road 26 approaching Council Ring Boulevard. Hendershot was operating a black and gold 2014 Harley Davidson motorcycle when Durham's Jeep crossed into Hendershot's path of travel. This resulted in a head on collision with Hendershot and Hendershot had no time to react or attempt to avoid the accident. Reese Hendershot suffered fatal injuries from the collision.

The Kokomo Police Department recently received the certified toxicology results from the drivers involved in this collision. After reviewing the results, have determined alcohol and drugs were not a contributing factor. Excessive speed was also eliminated as a contributing factor.

Anyone having additional information is asked to contact Kokomo Police Accident Investigator, Greg Smith.

This photo, published in January 1903, is a view on Sycamore Street looking east from LaFountain Street (Apperson Way). If you look carefully, you can see the old railroad bridge that was replaced in 1950 from last week’s post. The tracks running in the street are for the Kokomo trolley system. This photo is from the “Kokomo in Pictures” supplement to the Kokomo Daily Dispatch.

Kokomo Urban Outreach is celebrating 18 years of community service!! Founded by Jeff Newton on January 13, 2006, the first board of directors was put in place, and soon after KUO was recognized as a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. Since then, KUO has made a significant impact in the community through various initiatives such as Sunday Night meals and cookouts, Sidewalk Sunday School, Vacation Bible Schools, food pantries, Buddy Bags, Kitchen Co-op, Mission Teams, Sewing Classes, Clothing giveaways, Baby University, Girl and Boy Scouts, Job Club, Job readiness for adults, and then ManUP, StepUP for Girls and now UP and MiniUP. KUO has also been through several natural disasters, 2 tornados, a flood, and COVID-19, and has met many needs during those difficult times. KUO was part of the committee that brought public transportation to Kokomo. Along the way, KUO has made many friends, had thousands of volunteers, many financial supporters, and lots of prayer support. Most recently, the founder Jeff Newton retired and Sherry Rahl became the Executive Director. We look forward to celebrating with stories over the next few days and on January 13 we will share how you can support KUO. In the meantime, please share this post and we are asking you to do one more thing right now. Share your story. Some have received help over time, and others have given time and helped in various ways. Share your story in the comments below. If you were a part of a mission team or came from another town to serve let us know where. Thank you for your help in this celebration.
