The deputy leader of Hamas has been assassinated in Lebanon in an apparent Israeli drone strike, sparking renewed fears of the conflict spilling beyond Gaza into the wider Middle East.

Saleh Arouri was a founder of the group’s military wing and the most senior figure killed since the war with Israel began.

Hamas’s Lebanon-based allies Hezbollah said the killing in the Beirut suburb of Dahiyeh was ‘a serious assault’ on the country and ‘a dangerous development in course of war’.

The group pledged the deaths of Arouri along with other Al-Qassam members ‘will not go without a response or punishment’, adding that the resistance has ‘its finger on the trigger’.

Hezbollah and the Israeli military have been exchanging fire almost daily over the Israeli-Lebanese border since Israel’s military campaign in Gaza began nearly three months ago.

But so far the Lebanese group has appeared reluctant to dramatically escalate the fighting.

A significant response now could send the conflict spiralling into all-out war on Israel’s northern border.

Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency said the strike was carried out by an Israeli drone. Israeli officials declined to comment, as is typical in such scenarios.

Speaking to reporters, military spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari did not directly mention Arouri’s death but said: ‘We are focused and remain focused on fighting against Hamas.’

‘We are on high readiness for any scenario.’

The killing comes ahead of a visit to the region by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, even as the United States has tried to prevent a spread of the conflict, repeatedly warning Hezbollah — and its regional supporter, Iran — not to escalate the violence.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to press ahead with the assault in Gaza until Hamas is crushed and the more than 100 hostages still held by the militant group in Gaza are freed, which he has said could take several more months.

At the same time, Israeli officials have increasingly warned in recent days of stepped-up action against Hezbollah unless its cross-border fire stops.

Netanyahu and other Israeli officials have repeatedly threatened to kill Hamas leaders wherever they are.

The group’s October 7 attack from Gaza on southern Israel killed around 1,200 people, and some 240 others were taken hostage.

Israel claims to have killed a number of mid-level Hamas leaders in Gaza, but this would be the first time it has reached into another country to target the upper leaders, many of whom live in exile around the region.

Arouri was the deputy of Hamas’ supreme political leader, Ismail Haniyeh, and headed the group’s presence in the West Bank. He was also a key liaison with Hezbollah.

A 19-year–old man has died after a car lost control while trying to overtake and smashed into a building.

The teenager was a passenger in the car when it was involved in a crash in Rochdale at around 7.20pm yesterday.

It was travelling along Spotland Road towards Spotland when the driver attempted to go past a slower moving vehicle but veered off the road, police said.

Emergency services rushed to the scene after all three people in the car suffered injuries and they were rushed to hospital for treatment.

But despite the best efforts of paramedics and doctors, one of them died in the early hours of this morning.

Greater Manchester Police is now appealing for witnesses to the crash to come forward.

A spokesman for the force said: ‘Yesterday evening at around 7.20pm (Monday 1 January 2024), officers were called to a serious collision on Spotland Road in Rochdale.

‘Officers are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this incident – or may have dashcam, CCTV or mobile footage from the area at the time of the incident – to please share it with officers to assist their enquiries.’

Disruption to travel, roof damage and possible power outages are expected in the capital (Picture: )

‘Do not leave your homes,’ this is what Londoners are being told while Storm Henk batters Britain.

Footage circulating online shows massive scaffolding erected in Sutton becoming a victim to the strong winds.

The structure can be seen plummeting to the ground, also taking down Christmas lights, just a few meters from where a man is standing.

Disruption to travel, roof damage and possible power outages are expected to be just some of the consequences of the storm.

Families were forced to abandon their caravans in the Nene Valley, Northampton, this afternoon as the Environment Agency issued a severe flood warning for the area.

As they left with what little they could carry, the downpour continued along with strong winds.

Linda Page, who had been holidaying in Billing Aquadrome, said: ‘It is terrible, the flood warning siren reminds me of the noise of the air raid sirens in World War II.’

The Environment Agency warned yesterday that the water level of River Nene has continued to rise since yesterday when the rain began.

‘Low lying areas near to the River Nene are already flooded,’ the statement said.

‘We expect Billing Aquadrome to be affected at some point during the night, Monday into Tuesday, and are issuing this warning proactively to give sufficient notice to take action.’

‘Remain safe and be aware of your local surroundings.’

The strongest gusts will initially be focused around southwest England and south Wales during late morning and early afternoon today, with gusts of up to 80mph possible in exposed coastal locations.

As the low pressure moves north-eastwards the strongest wind gusts also move eastwards across the UK with many parts of southern England, the south Midlands and East Anglia experiencing 50-60mph gusts through the afternoon and evening. Inland gusts could reach up to 60-70mph in one or two places for a time.

Martin Goodall drove around Poole looking for drivers to issue fake ‘warnings’ to

A vigilante who routinely pulled over drivers for traffic offences while posing as a police officer could face jail.

Martin Goodall, 51, put a blue strobe light on the dashboard of his white Vauxhall van and flashed it when he saw people speeding or breaking other road laws in Poole, Dorset.

After getting a driver to stop, he would get out – wearing dark combat trousers, a dark top with badges and a police-themed lanyard – and tell them he was a sworn special constable.

Each time he issued a ‘warning’ which he logged meticulously in a pocket notebook.

Goodall was eventually caught out by real officers who saw his dodgy ‘blue lights’ (Picture: BNPS)

Goodall was in fact taken on as a volunteer special constable for Dorset Police in 1996 – but quit after a few months for unknown reasons.

He later claimed in court he ‘swore an oath to the Crown’ which still bound him 27 years later, and that he had reaffirmed it when Charles III became King.

His fantasy began to unravel when a suspicious motorist filed a report after the 51-year-old pulled him over because his licence plate was partly hidden by dirt.

Sergeant Steven Payne, a real traffic officer aware of the description in the report, spotted Goodall, seized items from his van including the strobe light and asked him to attend a voluntary interview at a later date.

Goodall then turned up at Bournemouth police station claiming to be a police officer and asked to interview Sergeant Payne.

Despite being under investigation, Goodall kept on stopping drivers and was caught out again – this time by a genuine volunteer constable.

SPC Robert Armadi happened to be driving past while Goodall lectured the driver of a black hatchback for allegedly ‘hammering it’ down a 20mph road.

When challenged by a real copper Goodall started ‘name-dropping’ his colleagues (Picture: BNPS)

When challenged, Goodall insisted he was a ‘fully attested and warranted special constable of the national vehicle harm reduction unit’, the court heard.

Armadi said: ‘I asked if he had a warrant card and he said “I have my attestation certificate”.

Armadi said he then rang 999, after which Goodall ‘began name-dropping police officers in Dorset Police and said he was a parish councillor in Wimborne’.

Policing representatives confirmed in court that special constables give up their powers when they leave the service.

Goodall, from Poole, was found guilty of 13 offences including impersonating a police officer, which is punishable by up to six months’ jail or a hefty fine.

He will be sentenced at a later date.

A woman trying to sell her house returned home to discover her entire driveway had been stolen.

Amanda Brochu got an alert on her Ring doorbell app and was shocked to see a bulldozer ripping up the concrete of her driveway on the outskirts of Orlando, Florida.

She returned home and found all that was left was a muddy track.

Ms Brochu told local news station WSVN: ‘I come home and my driveway is gone.’

The theft happened in December, not long after the single mum put the house on the market and had an offer accepted on another property, which was to be her ‘forever’ home.

It’s thought Ms Brochu was a victim of a scam, but no one’s quite sure exactly what the scam is.

What is known, however, is that unsolicited contractors turned up a week before the incident to measure her driveway.

Ms Brochu said she confronted one of them who claimed a man named Andre had hired them to find out how much it would cost to replace the driveaway.

The contractor showed her text messages from Andre with the request, which included her home address.

He said he asked to meet up with Andre, but Andre told him he was out of town, before cutting off contact when the contractor asked for proof he owned the house.

Ms Brochu reported all this to police and officers spoke to the contractors.

She said: ‘After the cops spoke to them, they called me back, and they said that he said it was a mistake, he just got the address wrong; nothing else will happen again.’

But a week later her driveway was removed.

Amanda learnt it would cost $10,000 (£7,900) to replace – money she didn’t have – and feared she wouldn’t be able to sell her house and buy her new ‘forever’ home.

She launched a GoFundMe, but when he story was reported in the local news a business owner kindly stepped in and offered to cover the costs.

Any money raised via GoFundMe will now go to charity she said.

Ms Brochu’s estate agent Rocki Sanchez said she was in ‘utter shock’ when told about the driveway theft.

Ms Brochu was told it would cost $10,000 to replace the driveaway (Picture: WFTV)

‘I’ve never seen this before. I’ve never had this happen to myself or anyone in our office,’ she said.

However, she shared the incident on an estate agent Facebook group, where several people said they had heard of similar stories.

‘I had multiple people come forward saying that they’ve seen things like this happen — whether it be driveways, roofs, painting, even outside the exterior,’ Ms Sanchez said. ‘So it happens more often than we actually see it.’

Ms Brochu has also been told such scams and thefts are more common than people think.

She added: ‘The target isn’t just homeowners, but contractors as well, who take on the business not fully doing their due diligence and being taken advantage of in the end by the scammer.’

Do you think this looks like the Queen frontman? (Picture: Kennedy News and Media)

Is this the real life, is this just cutlery?

Famous faces have been discovered in everything from fried onions and fish and chip wrapping to a slab of bacon.

Now the universe has gifted us with a spoon to eat this all with – one that featuresFreddie Mercury.

Nancy DeTrana was stunned to see the little silhouetto of a man of the Queen singer in his iconic yellow leather jacket pose from the 1986 Wembley tour.

Her 13-year-old daughter Elizabeth was left feeling like a champion when she first clocked Mercury looking back at her after taking the magnifico silverware out of the dishwasher.

The professor, who lives in Lenoir City, Tennessee, shared a photograph of the steamy singer on Facebook.

To some of her friends, however, it was more Elvis Presley (or to us at Metro.co.uk, George Michael) than Freddie.

This is certainly one way for Queen to live forever (Picture: Kennedy News and Media)

‘I’m a huge Queen and Freddie Mercury fan. I love his flamboyance and he had an amazing singing voice and stage presence too,’ Nancy said.

‘My daughter found it. She came running out and said it looked like a singer on the spoon handle.

‘You can see a clearly defined head, a body, two legs and an arm raised up in a fist.

‘I saw Freddie Mercury straight away doing his iconic pose, it spoke of complete Freddie.’

But rather than place the spoon in a glass cabinet or make a shrine out of it, Nancy popped the spoon back in the dishwasher.

Nancy, whose favourite Queen song is Save Me, said she had little choice but to click a photo of the spoon – and her fellow Queen fans on Facebook loved it.

‘Don’t clean that spoon ever again! Freddie lives,’ one user said.

Another added: ‘Sell that on eBay.’

The world is a weird and confusing place, so it’s no wonder that our brains do what they can to make sense of it all.

Illusory faces are one such way in a process that scientists call ‘face pareidolia’ or, for religious images, the ‘Nun Bun phenomenon’.

As we’re pretty social animals, we see humans pretty much every day. In other words, we’ve gotten so used to seeing people that our sensitive brains are just really, really eager to see them everywhere.

‘So many people see Jesus in a piece of toast, I had to take that because he’s my favourite singer,’ Nancy added.

‘If that brings a little bit of joy to somebody’s day then it’s done its job. I’ll be keeping an eye out for more famous faces in my dishes from now on.’
