We’re living a newbuild nightmare – we can’t get any sleep and haven’t opened our windows for a YEAR ... https://marionews.cf/0K8FLb

RESIDENTS living near a newbuild development have revealed how it has made their lives a nightmare as they have been left unable to sleep or open windows for over a year.

Neighbours of the major building project in Rotherhithe, South London, claim that noise from the building site has left them tossing and turning at night since it began in May 2021.

The Canada Water Masterplan is set to be completed over the next ten years

However, local residents have complained of excessive noise[/caption]

They complain of excessive noise, dust and dirt on their cars and rubble from the site falling into their gardens – and it is set to continue for ten years

Local homeowner Michelle, not her real name, told MyLondon: “The noise was like a bomb was going off this morning.

“I’ve not opened my windows since the building started. I had to miss two meetings the other day because of the noise.

“I’ve had the rubble that has been in my garden and there was rubble with a metal piece on it. If a child had picked that up and put it in their mouth, that’s so dangerous.

“We’ve had red stuff on the cars and it was £35 last time to clean. It has happened two times and to the guy’s car next door too.”

She also alleged that the workmen building the new block had “harrassed” her by shouting and screaming as she walked by in response to the complaints.

Michelle added that the builders are “intimidating” and have left her nervous about leaving the house.

Fellow resident, Andre Clarke, said: “Since they put up the sheeting around it the noise hasn’t bothered me but it still stops my children from sleeping.

“The building work is everyday from about nine in the morning until five or six in the afternoon.

“We went to the council before but they didn’t get back to us.

“The main problem is the dust and everything that comes off it.”

British Land, developers of the project known as the Canada Water Master Plan, hosts regular consultations with locals and say they take their complaints “very seriously”.

However, Michelle and her neighbour Alan Murphy say they have stopped attending after being accused of bad behaviour by staff for voicing their concerns.

Michelle added: “They drive you to that point. They say we are angry and we’re not angry. We are frustrated. It takes two weeks for them to answer an email.”

A British Land spokesperson said: “It is our aim to ensure that all residents and businesses in the area are not unduly affected by our work and we strive to adhere to construction industry best practice at all times.

“This includes making sure that the Considerate Constructors Scheme is complied with by all of the contractors we work with and implementing a range of stringent measures to track the potential impact of any works activities.

“Part of this work includes the gathering of information on a real-time basis to ensure ongoing compliance with the planning and environmental requirements of Southwark Council. To date, we have been compliant with all of the council’s requirements.

“However, as a considerate and community-conscious developer, it is important that we work to go above and beyond these standards wherever possible.”

What are your rights

If building work creates excessive noise you can complain to your local council.

Even if the project has had planning permission granted, the council must look into any complaint about any noise that could be considered a statutory nuisance under the 1990 Environment Act.

If it is determined to be a nuisance, councils can issue enforcement notices to limit noise or even withdraw permission for the project.

Contact Citizens Advice for more advice on residents’ rights.

We live on nightmare newbuild estate riddled with issues YEARS after we moved in – it’s brutal & no one will help ... https://marionews.cf/0K8FLb

FUMING residents on a nightmare newbuild estate say it is riddled with issues years after they moved in – and no one will help.

The homeowners on the Millbrook development in Nunthorpe, Teesside said the developer failed to clean up eyesore piles of bricks and rubble left behind by builders.

A green space on the Teesside newbuild estate has become an eyesore scrapheap

The roads around the safe were left unfinished for years

They claimed road surfaces were relaid only a matter of weeks ago, after a six-year wait – but the estate still does not have any much-needed speed bumps.

Residents are also still unhappy with the gardens and green spaces and say they struggle to get straight answers from developer Avant Homes.

The local council has even painted blue marks flagging required improvements in areas across the estate.

Dot Harris, 78, moved into her £287,000 semi-detached home, which was one of the last to be built, 16 months ago.

She said: “I’ve asked, and asked, and asked them to re-do my back garden but I’m still waiting.

“I’ve heard other people say that if it rains it turns their gardens turn to mud because there’s no drainage in.

Dot added: “The roads aren’t finished either and the pavements have got bits sticking out of them.

“We have lots of children on this estate and we need speed bumps for their safety.”

A green space on the estate lined with trees was initially a seated area before it was used as a scrapheap for building material – and has only just been cleared.

Redd Gogna, 58, said: “It was initially a greenbelt with seven trees but one day without any warning they turfed it up to complete the estate.

“They said they would restore it to it’s natural state but that hasn’t happened.

“When you speak to them it’s very matter of fact and they are slow to respond.

“You do feel as though you’re getting fobbed off.”

He added: “You can see from the roads and pavements what a botch job it has been.

“The plan was to put speed bumps on the roads when they were completed but they’ve finally been done and there’s no sign of any.

“If they kept us informed there wouldn’t be an issue but the communication has been really poor.”

AVANT SCARRED

Dominic Dunn, 41, said: “There were little things like they put the hot and cold water the wrong way around.

“The pavements have been trashed by the trucks but as far as they’re concerned they’re fine and they’re completed.

“When you ask them what they’re doing they say they’ll let us know but you never hear from them.”

A mum on the estate said: “It’s been absolutely brutal. There’s a lot of young kids who can’t play on the communal areas because of the way they’ve left it.

“There were broken nails and bits of metal. We all pay for the upkeep of it but yet you can’t use any of it and the kids don’t go outside.

“Our kids are 12 and 14 now but they’ve never been able to play because of the state of things.

“We also waited ages for the roads to be done. We just want everything finished now.

“Our garden is horrendous too and needs to be relaid. We’ve raised issues with Avant a long time ago but you don’t hear anything.”

Avant Homes said: “We are conducting a full review of the development with our sub-contractors to address the estate’s open spaces.

“This includes identifying and rectifying any matters which relate to the landscaping of the development’s green spaces and gardens.

“Work on the final surfacing of the roads will also be undertaken on the northern element of the development, and any outstanding remedial work across the whole site will be completed.”

Avant Homes said it is carrying out ‘remedial work’ on the newbuild estate

The retailer has moved to reduce the prices of more than 700 essential products bought by Irish families

With an average price decrease of 10 per cent, customers can expect to save on a wide range of Tesco own-brand products and brands bought week-in, week-out.

Major cash boost for thousands of Irish as once-off €385 payment to land in bank accounts in just WEEKS ... https://marionews.cf/0K8FLb

A MAJOR cash boost will appear in thousands of Irish bank accounts in just weeks as applications for the 2023 Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance open.

The allowance provides a once-off payment to eligible families towards the cost of school clothing and footwear.

A major cash boost will appear in thousands of Irish bank accounts in just weeks

Heather Humphreys opened applications for the 2023 Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance

This year, the payment rates have been increased by €100 per child to reflect the ongoing cost of living challenges.

In 2023 €260 will be paid for children aged 4 to 11 and €385 for children aged 12 years and over in second-level education.

Opening applications today, Minister for Social Protection Heather Humphreys said: “I am delighted to announce that the Back-to-School Clothing and Footwear Allowance for 2023 opens for applications today.

“As Minister, I very much recognise the pressures that families are under in relation to back-to-school costs and am pleased to have secured almost €90 million for the scheme this year.

“As part of a number of targeted cost of living measures announced in February, I have managed to secure a €100 increase for each child once again this year.

“This scheme is so important in terms of supporting parents in meeting those back-to-school costs over the coming weeks.

“Through the increased Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance, as well as the extra €100 paid on Child Benefit this week, we are doing all we can to support families right across the State.”

The majority of payments will be paid automatically to more than 120,000 families in respect of approximately 210,000 children during the week beginning July 10, with no application form required.

The Department of Social Protection is currently processing these payments, and customers will receive a confirmation informing them of their automatic entitlement, on their MyWelfare account or by post.

This will result in approximately €70 million being paid to these families.

Families who do not receive notification from the Department of an automated payment should make an application online on www.MyWelfare.ie even if they received a payment last year.

Online applications can be made from today, Thursday, June 8.

Minister Humphreys added: “As in previous years, more than 80 per cent of payments under this scheme will be paid without the need to make an application.

“My Department will issue automatic payments to more than 120,000 families in July, and I would urge all families to check their eligibility for this important scheme.”

Students aged between 18 to 22 years must be returning to full-time second-level education in a recognised school or college in the autumn of 2023 to retain an entitlement to payment.

The Department is providing dedicated phone lines 071-9193318 and 0818-11-11-13 to answer enquiries relating to the Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance during usual business hours, Monday to Friday, from 9.00am to 5.00pm.

People can also email the Department at [email protected] if they have an enquiry regarding their application or entitlement.

The closing date to apply for this year’s Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance is September 30, 2023.

Further information on the eligibility criteria for the Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance is available at www.gov.ie/bscfa.
