A line snaked inside Kansas City Museum’s Charles and Anna Milbank Library Thursday, Dec. 12 as children and their families anxiously awaited to meet one of this year’s Fairy Princesses.

Fairy Princess — a tradition of a selected individual dressing in princess attire for children to share their holiday wishes, in a majorly similar Santa Claus fashion — began in 1935 at Kline’s Department Store, which was formerly located on Main Street, Downtown Kansas City.

This new holiday folklore was sparked to introduce and promote the Store’s Toyland section, according to the Kansas City Museum’s (KCM) website. However, families in attendance Thursday discussed how it was additionally the Kline’s Jewish background, which led them to the Fairy Princess concept.

When Kline’s officially closed its doors in the 1970s, it left Kansas City nearly two decades without a Fairy Princess. However, in 1987, KCM decided to continue this tradition at its location, 3218 Gladstone Blvd.

“People were lined-up around the block,” said Denise Morrison, Museum director of collections and curatorial affairs. “It wasn’t meant to go on year-after-year, but it did.”

Burgers, eggs, sausage and bacon sizzle on the griddle, prepared to satisfy breakfast and lunchtime hunger pangs, order after order and year after year.

Harold’s Drive-In at 1337 Admiral Blvd., nestled between a Rodeway Inn and Hope Faith Ministries, has earned iconic status — not just for its location but also the number of years in operation.

Come Dec. 31, following a series of financial hardships, current operator Deb Walker will fill the last order of the day one final time. This restaurant closes daily by 2 p.m.

“We (the building owner and I) can’t agree on the lease,” Walker stated last Friday, indicating a raise in rates she could no longer afford. The lease agreement includes the restaurant equipment, which means moving to another location is not an option.

Walker said this decision to close hasn’t been easy. She has served customers as a familiar face at Harold’s since 2003 and took over daily operations when partner Nancy Smith sold the building in 2020. Smith worked for Harold McBain from 1986 to 1989 before eventually purchasing the drive-in in 1999 — keeping the same name and menu.

McBain took over an existing ice cream shop named Dairy Supreme in 1958. After adding burgers, tenderloins and other favorites, the name changed to Harold’s Drive-In with the motto “For Honest to Goodness Goodness.”

Community members, friends and artists gathered on Dec. 6 at the Mattie Rhodes Cultural Arts Center (MRC) on the Westside for MRC’s final First Friday event of the year and the opening reception for ‘The Loteria Show.’

Brought by local artist DINKC and co-curated by MRC’s gallery coordinator and artist Charlie Ortiz (also known as Zitro), the art exhibit displays over 40 canvases from local and out-of-state artists as they create new renditions of the playing cards used in Loteria — a traditional Mexican game of chance.

In Loteria, players use a 4 by 4 board that shows a variation of pictures from a 54 playing card deck — each card with a different name. Like Bingo, a caller reads off the card’s name, while players mark off those cards mentioned. Once the board is completed in accordance with the prior agreement (four corners, in a row, the entire board, etc.), the player yells out “Loteria” and wins.

For the art exhibit, featured artists had the option to pick a playing card from the existing deck, applying their own personal touch to the original card or creating an entirely new playing card.

Brainstorming for the show began in midsummer with logistically planning, artist selection and promotional activities taking place over the fall.

From a display of hand-stitched quilts to an upside-down Christmas tree, the 15th Annual Pendleton Heights Holiday Homes Tour offered an enjoyable look at one of Kansas City’s oldest neighborhoods.

From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7, six homes highlighted their unique architecture with festive holiday decorations. From an 1893 brick Victorian with updated kitchen and baths to a 1960 brick ranch, each home offered historic elements mingled with modern features and decor.

Still in the process of restoration and updates, a former storefront at 413 Park is now home to a family of three, which decorates the exposed ductwork of the first floor with garland and ornaments, while the tree hangs from the ceiling as well.

Tour attendees were challenged with a scavenger hunt to locate a Snoopy ornament hidden at each home — with docents stamping booklets and offering hints. A fully stamped page indicating all six Snoopy’s were found was good for a treat at PH Coffee (2200 Lexington Ave.) afterward.

At Scuola Vita Nuova Charter School (525 Garfield Ave.) dozens of quilts were on display — all products of members of the Kansas City Modern Quilt Guild. The exhibit titled ‘Pieces of Home,’ featured quilts with Christmas and home themes, along with abstract designs.

Northeast Arts KC — a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting cultural events and artists around Northeast Kansas City — hosted its third annual open studio tour Dec. 7 and 8.

Nine locations across the Northeast made way for over 21 local artists who presented their work throughout the weekend. Some of these locations included Core Coffee, Latinx Education Collaborative, Pendleton Arts Block, Back Door Pottery, Schliefkevision and The EGG, among others.

Open Studio started three years ago with a mission to help local artists find a space to exhibit their work in and around the community, Northeast Arts KC Treasurer Rebecca Koop said in a recent Northeast News podcast.

Among the weekend’s featured artists included Fred Crawford — a muralist and painter. Crawford, while more recently known for his barrel paintings, which were collaborations between four Northeast neighborhoods — Indian Mound, Scarritt Renaissance, Paseo West and Pendleton Heights — and The Northeast Kansas City Chamber of Commerce, said he started creating art when he was 10 years old.

While his work started with cartoon character drawings, he has gone on to create paintings for restaurants, Whiteman Air force Base and completed a mural project in Pacino Fossil, West Africa, which he said was exhibited at the American Embassy.

While Crawford doesn’t live in the Northeast himself, he said “you can taste it, it’s so close.”

A bitter wind chill didn’t stop this Northeast community from joining Mattie Rhodes Center Thursday afternoon, Dec. 5 for the grand opening and ribbon cutting of its new Violence Prevention Center location (5108 Independence Ave).

Mattie Rhodes Center (MRC) — a nonprofit, Kansas City organization — works to equip individuals and families across the Kansas City Metro with proper resources from social services and counseling to arts education, which they can use to succeed.

The organization itself was founded 127 years ago in honor of Mattie Florence Rhodes — a teenager who was dedicated to supporting youth and others in need around the end of the 19th century. Throughout its years, MRC has remained dedicated to her legacy — including offering support and education to foster a secure and inclusive environment, according to its website.

Operating on three core pillars — embrace inclusion, cultivate growth and inspire hope — MRC has gone on to expand its work into a multitude of umbrella programs, including ParateXPaz — or StandUp4Peace — Violence Prevention Program.

While MRC Manager of Public Safety Molly Manske said ParateXPaz started just over a year ago, the organization started the process of obtaining this new Independence Avenue location over three years ago.

When I applied as an intern at Northeast News nearly seven months ago, I saw this as an opportunity to learn and grow as a journalist. I never imagined becoming so attached to a community newspaper that I didn’t grow up with.

I graduate from the University of Missouri – Kansas City (UMKC) on Sunday, Dec. 15, and while I am excited and ready to no longer be in school, other doors are closing along with the doors to Haag Hall. I will no longer be able to work at Northeast News after I leave college as I will no longer qualify for the Mellon Foundation grant, which has paid for the majority of my work.

My time at Northeast has served as a learning opportunity — one after another. I also met some amazing people I will forever be grateful for.
