As we wrap up 2024 at Overneath, we’re so grateful to be part of the worldwide video production community—a collective of humans from diverse backgrounds, skills, and interests, all driven by the same passion: crafting images that communicate and connect. We tell stories, promote products, bring awareness, and elicit emotions—and every person in this industry brings something valuable to the table.

We’re incredibly proud of the unique team we have at Overneath, as well as the independent contractors we collaborate with across the U.S. And, of course, we’re honored by the clients who trust us with their visions and their budgets. Here’s to the people, the creativity, and the collaboration that made 2024 special. We can’t wait to see what 2025 holds—whether reconnecting with old friends or working with new ones.

🎥 New Video Spot for Southwestern Michigan College’s Nursing Program! 🎓

Proud to share one of two custom videos created with Southwestern Michigan College and DDM Marketing & Communications. This version speaks directly to traditional students starting their nursing journey, helping SMC connect with audiences in a meaningful way.

Working alongside local partners in West Michigan makes this project even more special, as it highlights what’s possible when a creative team, client, and purpose come together.

Some of the Looks 👀🎶
We’ve been working on a series of videos featuring the amazing trombonist Hana Beloglavec. These will be rolling out over the next few months, so stay tuned! It’s a special project for us because our president, Gordon Van Gent , and Hana go way back to their days at the WMU School of Music

We filmed these in the Dalton Center Recital Hall, with the audio recorded by Paul Schaedig at Western Sound Studios. Our Director of Photography, Landon Lacey , suggested filming on stage but facing the full hall to really show off the space. It’s amazing how one creative decision can give a whole new feel to a performance!

🌄 From Fog to Magic: Behind the Scenes with VFX 🎬

Director Drew Raklovits had a vision for ending the Washington Army National Guard commercial with an iconic shot—soldiers standing on a ridge overlooking the majestic Mount Rainier. Finding the right location wasn’t easy, and after a 1.5-hour drive, we faced full fog despite catching a clear night.

But, thanks to our DP, Chad Terpstra stra, who suggested, "trust the comp," we captured the scene anyway, knowing VFX could step in. Our VFX supervisor, Jeremy Davidson worked his magic in post-production, and the final shot turned out incredible.

Sometimes, it takes a mix of persistence and creative solutions to bring a vision to life! 🙌

New video campaign for Western Michigan University , now live! 🎥✨

We’re proud to share our collaboration with Western Michigan University’s Haworth College of Business.The “Imagine” campaign showcases the vibrant community of Kalamazoo and the unique opportunities available at WMU.

From capturing the energy of campus life to highlighting the beauty of the surrounding area, our goal was to create a video that resonates with students and tells the story of what makes WMU truly special. This project brought together an amazing team and cast, and we’re excited for you to see the results.

🎥 Honored to Share Our Commercial Campaign for the National Guard! 🚁🔥

In September 2023, Overneath Creative was selected by the United States Department of Defense for a major initiative: creating a series of videos to enhance recruitment efforts for the Washington Army National Guard. Over six action-packed days in October, our crews filmed across State of Washington, capturing the incredible heroism and dedication of the WAARNG citizen soldiers. From Blackhawk helicopters to river rescues, we documented their critical roles in firefighting, flood relief, rescue operations, and more.

We’re proud to share the long-form 90-second version of this commercial campaign that brings their stories to life. 🎬

🕸️ Who's in Charge of Creative? 🤔

We've all been there: too many cooks in the kitchen, each with their own vision. While collaboration is key, having too many conflicting creative directions can result in a final product that’s discombobulated, vanilla, over-the-top, or simply unclear in its purpose.

Any of the three parties—Agency, Video Team, or Client—could lead the creative charge. The real challenge is defining roles clearly.

Agency-Led Approach: The agency develops creative briefs, scripts, and unique concepts based on client discussions. They then hand it over to the video team to bring that vision to life.

Video Team-Led Approach: The video team takes the lead in developing a creative treatment based on initial ideas and research provided by the agency. They execute the client's goals through this vision.

Client-Led Approach: A marketing executive at the client’s company builds out a script or creative brief directly, with a clear vision. The agency and video team then execute and distribute this vision effectively.

The key is clear roles and a final say from one party. Collaboration refines the video and ensures all perspectives are considered, but too many cooks can create a dish by committee—a bland meal that satisfies no one.
