My pumpkin patch that grew out of nowhere. I didn’t plant seeds so I’m not sure how it got here 😂 So far there’s only one pumpkin. I hope more start to grow. They’re not edible as they’re growing on top of our septic tank, so we’ll carve them for Halloween.

Is anyone in the area homeschooling their children? I’m considering offering free ukulele lessons as an elective. I do have a Bachelor of Science degree and was also taught ukulele by Jakob Puchmyer, who is an Austrian ukulele instructor. I am also homeschooling my son. I could set up a donation page to cover the costs of equipment and the lessons. Donations aren’t necessary but greatly appreciated. The course would be a six month course, one day per week for a half hour. Do you think this would be a good idea for our community? The lessons would be 3-12 grades.
I have 2 spots available tomorrow from 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm (July 9) for a beginner ukulele course if anyone is interested. It’s $25 and I’ll provide a ukulele for you to use during class if you don’t have one. Message me if you’re interested. It’s day 1 of the beginner course. The class takes place in the main parlor of the home. Nicely air conditioned 😊
Does anyone know of any public areas to find pawpaw trees? I’ve never had the fruit and would like to try one. I think they ripen in September?? Not sure.

Anyone is welcome to the wood from the black walnut tree we had to cut down. It was about to fall on our house. If no one wants it, we’ll just burn it. The tree was about 80-90 feet tall so there’s a lot of big branches and the tree trunk is HUGE. Just send me a message when you want to come by. It’s free, of course.
Update: Someone loaned me a knee scooter. Do any neighbors of mine have a knee scooter I can borrow? I just had foot surgery and they gave me crutches and they’re hurting my hands and arms so badly. I’ll return the scooter as soon as my dr says I can put weight on my foot. I checked Walmart and they don’t have any in stock.
A huge red maple tree just came down in our backyard! The wind was so strong. It took out several trees with it. It was so loud. Anyone know of an insured company that can cut down our walnut and maple trees. If those come down, they’re coming down on our house.

Let’s have some fun! Tonight, I will be doing a live feed on Facebook of the living room. I’m going to be sleeping there and I want you guys to see if any paranormal stuff is happening around me. We’re still doing work in the living room so that’s the reason it looks unfinished. I’ve never slept in here before so I’m curious if there will be any paranormal action. I will take questions before I go to sleep. This video is of the main entry.

We’ve been here exactly a year. It’s so nice to live in a place where I don’t need to ask permission to paint my house 😂 I hate HOAs so much. If we had grass growing up through the mulch of our front yard trees, we’d get warnings. If our shutters and backyard fence started to fade because of the sun, we had to restain. I had to even ask permission to paint my front door red. It’s also so nice because I can wash my car without neighbors walking by every 3 minutes 😂 The houses were about 12ft apart so it was like living in unattached apartments. The only reason why I bought a house in Frisco, TX was because the schools there have the best autism program in the nation, so after my son graduated, we sold.
I’m looking for someone who makes dulcimers in the area. Does anyone know of anybody or if anyone has one for sale?

The Orr Manor, Lee county, Va
Lee county is at the tip of Virginia’s tail. It is nearly 400 miles away from the state capital and eight other state capitals are closer to it than Richmond is. To the north and west is Kentucky and to the south is Tennessee.
James Wesly Orr was born in Lee county in 1841. His mother was the first of three wives his father would have and he was the fourth oldest of the nine children is father had. Growing up the all of them worked on their father’s farm. James’ father was uneducated and from and early age James began taking every opportunity to further his. He walked miles to attend country schools, and then went to the Jonesville (Lee county seat) Academy. Like Abraham Lincoln he never attended law school, but stayed up late reading books on the subject.
When the Civil War began when he was 19 and like many of his brothers he joined the southern army. He fought well quickly rising in rank from a private to a lieutenant. In the Battle of Antietam near Harpers Ferry WV, James was wounded in battle and his arm was amputated. After continually losing the Civil War, the victory at the Battle of Antietam gave Lincoln the confidence to sign the Declaration of Emancipation which liberated enslaved people. Even after losing an arm James stayed in the southern army until the end of the war.
1865 was very busy year for James Orr. After the war ended and he returned home where he was quickly won an election as the county sheriff. That same year he married Patty Vermilliam and they would have six children. That’s also the same year he built this house. It is 4 bedrooms and is 2,700 sq ft. It is a Victorian era home, influenced in Gothic Revival and Italiante architecture.
After three years as the sheriff he was elected to be the Court Clerk. After ten and a half years of being the clerk the Virginia General Assembly appointed him to the position of Judge of Lee county. He would be a judge for eight years, during that time he would sit on political committees to help determine the legalities of new laws.
After retiring from his position as a judge he spent eight years as the chair of the Democrat Committee of Lee County.
James Orr died in 1931 at the age of 89. He is burried in the cemetery that was on his property, along with many of his family members. After his death several people owned the house but eventually the house was abandoned and sat empty. In 2020 it and 1.6 acres of land were sold for $139,000 to a family who moved in with the intention to restore it.

Does anyone know what the Jonesville Institute was in 1911? I love learning the history of this town.
This is the first time I have ever seen a cherry tree. I love them so much that I even have a cherry blossom ukulele. It’s so weird being in love with a flower that I’ve only seen in pictures. I got to touch them and I took some beautiful photos. You may think I’m strange to become so excited over something so small, but I’ve wanted to see one for as long as I can remember.
I’m testing exterior paint. The house will probably be that blue color. The purple was on it when we moved in. We have a lot of boards to replace too.

Hard to believe a year has gone by since we put up our Texas house for sale. I have no regrets. I love it here. It sold the very first weekend it was listed and we had a 60 day closing.
