August 1947 - Drive-In Movie ads for the Tri-City Drive-In Movies on the Kingsport-Bristol Highway and the King Springs Drive-In on King Springs Road. These were the first two Drive-In movie theatres around Johnson City with King Springs being the first. Before there was two drive-in's, the ads in the paper did not give a name to the drive-in, just advertised as drive-in in very small print. On the right side going south was nothing but billboards, the visible billboards are along what is now Mountcastle, a shopping plaza on this side now where Johnny Brusco's and etc. are located, the opposite side, a McDonalds. August 1945 - One of the pictures captured in downtown Johnson City on August 14th, 1945 after President Truman announced the end of WW II at 7:00 p.m. Police said they could not remember when as large a crowd gathered downtown. "At 7 pm on August 14, 1945, President Harry Truman stood before reporters gathered at the White House and announced the unconditional surrender of Japan. The Pacific War was over. Although the formal signing of the terms of surrender ending World War II would not occur until September 2nd, the announcement of Victory over Japan Day, or V-J Day, sent millions of Americans–citizens and members of the armed forces, out into the streets of cities and towns across the country and around the world."

It was on this day 75 years ago on August 14th, 1945 at 7:00 p.m. that President Truman made that announcement. People of Johnson City flooded the downtown streets in celebration after hearing the announcement of the end of WW II. "At 7 pm on August 14, 1945, President Harry Truman stood before reporters gathered at the White House and announced the unconditional surrender of Japan. The Pacific War was over. Although the formal signing of the terms of surrender ending World War II would not occur until September 2nd, the announcement of Victory over Japan Day, or V-J Day, sent millions of Americans–citizens and members of the armed forces, out into the streets of cities and towns across the country and around the world." Circa mid 50's - You are looking in a northwest direction across North Roan at the Beverly Court and Coffee Shop on North Roan at Sunset, (present location of Aaron's Electronics). Closed around August of 1964 to make way for a bank. You can find several posts on this page of the Beverly Court, it changed looks sometime after this photo was made. Source: Postcard.

November 1967 - "All-Service Family" - "With a pride so appropriately justified, Mr. and Mrs. Jack W. Smith arrange the pictures of their soldier sons on the wall of their home in Boone Trail Subdivision. Four of their five sons are now with the armed forces and the fifth recently had a medical discharge. Four have been in Vietnam; two are still there. The photographs, from left, are Pvt. Jesse W. Smith, Pfc. James W. Smith, Sgt. Jack W. Smith Jr., and Sft. Jeffrie W. Smith. The son just discharged and at the family home at present is Sgt. Joe W. Smith IV. Their father was a sergeant in the U.S. Army during the 1930's and a commander in the U.S. Navy during World War II." Howard McCorkle's freshman picture (circa 1923) while in the Johnson City Schools. Mr. McCorkle graduated from Science Hill High School in 1927. He became a math teacher at Junior High in 1933, in 1943 was named principal of Science Hill High School. He became Supervisor of Instruction for the city school system in 1952 and in 1956 became Superintendent of Schools until he retired in 1974. C Howard McCorkle April 8, 1909 - October 11, 1998.
