Bettye Jean Ferguson of Lake 0' Pines, 95, passed away on June 10, 2024, in Kingsland, Texas. She was known for her selfless nature, always giving of her time, possessions, and love to those around her. Bettye's kitchen was a place of warmth and hospitality, where many found comfort in a cup of coffee or glass of tea and a slice of homemade cake, pie or bread.

From Ole Mossy’s Up River Kayak Rentals and Boat Tours:

UPDATE!!
Lake O' The Pines is letting out over 3000cfs, the max. River conditions are still hazardous for paddlers, especially with mud boat runners taking great advantage of the conditions and their races were scheduled/canceled... but they are still coming in like another flood! We are still not ready to open up for our paddlers safety.
Safety over making a living! Hoping for the 4th of July!!! Thank you to all our paddlers for your patience and understanding. Ole Mossy's Up River Kayak Rentals & Boat Tours LLC

Rick Smith, Columnist

I’m hard pressed to name a favorite color. I like bold, eye-catching colors. But I usually wear black. I like black.

Blue jeans. Black shirt. Black boots. I’m good to go.

Black suit, black Oxford dress shoes, white shirt, and the razzle dazzle of a red tie. Put me in the conference room.

I read that a whole bunch of folks like blue. I like blue – in its place.

Seth Buckner/Heritage Baptist Church

Ants are remarkable creatures. Although tiny, they display great organization, industry, and strength that is fascinating to study. More than 12,000 species are found throughout the world. If ants could talk, they might say, “You forgot to wipe your counter. I am going to go tell a thousand of my friends!”

Thistles are a great attraction for pollinators. The flowers are very attractive, have a fuzzy purple bloom, and the plant has several medicinal qualities. On the other hand, they’re as tough a w**d as you’ll find anywhere. Their tap root is known to go down as far as over 15’, and it annually puts out many thousands of ultralight seeds.

She was a frugal chef. Not by choice though.

She managed to put three homemade meals on the table every day. No easy task.

She cooked with her soul, using simple ingredients. Her food was delicious, and if it wasn’t, it was because she was working out the choreography of the ingredients across her palate. She was a master in the use of seasonings.
