The sign in front of Pickens High School will be removed on Friday, March 28 in preparation for a roundabout that will be built at the intersection. The roundabout is a project of the Georgia Department of Transportation and has been in the works for many years. The sign will be rebuilt after the project is completed. See Pickens County Schools - GA's post for more details.

The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) has requested the Pickens High School sign be removed from the easement for the purposes of constructing a roundabout at the intersection of Dragon Drive and Highway 53. The Pickens County School District does not own the land where the sign is located and has been in discussion with GDOT over multiple years regarding both the PHS sign and the roundabout. Our sign will be removed on March 28, 2025 and will be reconstructed after the completion of roadwork.

City of Jasper, Georgia crews spruce up Peace Park, which has undergone a transformation over the last few months. Overgrown shrubs and landscaping have been removed to make way for new landscaping in the coming weeks.

Crews working an active wildfire at the overlooks on Highway 136/Burnt Mountain. Pickens Fire Chief Tim Prather said the blaze is at least four acres, likely more. There are four stations on the scene. The fire was around 20 percent contained at 2:30 p.m.
🔥Earlier today, the National Weather Service issued a red flag warning that will be in effect until 9:00 p.m. “There will be high winds with gusts up to 30 mph, low humidity and dry conditions for North Georgia. Any fire that develops could spread rapidly. OUTDOOR BURNING IS STRONGLY DISCOURAGED FOR TODAY.”

The Pickens County Commission Chairman has authorized the opening of a tornado shelter for residents who live in mobile homes or manufactured housing Saturday 3.15.2025. The shelter is located in the basement of the Pickens County Administration building 1266 East Church Street Jasper Georgia. The shelter will open when a tornado watch is issued for Pickens County. Notification of the Tornado Watch and shelter opening will be made on Facebook. The shelter will then remain open until the threat of severe weather has passed. If you plan to take advantage of the shelter please come as early as possible after opening to ensure you are not driving during the storm.
