As a U.S. Army Veteran, I know that the leading cause of death for veterans is su***de. In fact, More U.S. Veterans Have Committed Su***de In The Last Decade Than Died In The Vietnam War.

Preventing veteran su***des are the Department of Veterans Affairs' self-stated highest clinical priority.
And yet, VA data shows about 22 veterans continue to die by su***de daily in this country. Sadly, that number has remained largely stagnate or worsened in recent years despite increased spending and programs aimed at helping.

National leaders have dedicated considerable resources to improve the identification and prevention of the factors associated with su***de risk among service members and veterans. One specific, relevant factor is the transition from military service to civilian life. Separation from military service is a milestone characterized by a variety of psychosocial stressors and adjustment challenges such as disruptions in social support, financial strains, and changes in access to health care and mental health care) that might be associated with increased risk of su***de.

In this Episode, I interview Greg C Washington. He is a West Point graduate and veteran. He saw a good friend of his take his life on Facebook Live, and it brought him back to my own battles with mental health. If his transition out of the military was that hard, then imagine what it was like for others. He has started a non-profit and kicked off with a Walk To Honor.

In a July 2015 Leadership series with SuccessLabs, Kimble says his parents, Fred Kimble and Iris Ricard Kimble, were among his strongest role models growing up. As an only child, he’s very close to them, and they often included him in discussions about their work in real estate. “My parents had to work for everything they accomplished, and they helped me to understand the real world and what was out there,” he says.

His father’s best friend, Nathaniel Scott, an Army Ranger, was also involved in real estate and worked with Kimble when he expressed an interest in pursuing a career outside of sports marketing. “He’s a guy who I’ve seen have a lot of success, and then made a couple of bad decisions and then build himself up again and worked hard to accomplish great things,” Kimble says. “He’s taught me that you have ups and downs, that there are peaks and valleys.”
