It may be time to donate that ’84 Mustang that has been sitting in the driveway for ten years. Many properties have vehicles collecting dust in the front yard, but donating these vehicles can make a positive difference. Mercy House Adult and Teen Challenge (MHATC), headquartered in Georgetown, gladly accepts old, rundown vehicles through its Vehicle Donation Program (VDP).

Do you ever wonder who first thought of Halloween?

Happy Halloween! Today we are taking a look at the history behind this beloved holiday. Halloween’s origins are surprisingly ancient, dating all the way back to the Celtic festival of Samhain. Later, Christianity supplanted the ancient Celtic celebration with All Souls’ Day on November 2nd. Early celebrations shared many similarities with Samhain, including large bonfires and dressing up in costumes (usually angels, saints, or devils). The Church also dedicated November 1st as All Saint’s Day; the holiday was often called All-hallows or All-hallowmas. The night before it was often referred to as All-Hallows Eve, a name that eventually turned into what we know it as today: Halloween.

While Halloween celebrations were extremely limited in colonial New England due to Protestant beliefs, a wave of Irish immigrants in the second half of the 19th century helped popularize Halloween across America. Over time, the holiday lost its religious and superstitious undertones as newspapers and community leaders began to encourage people to avoid anything “frightening” or “grotesque” in their Halloween celebrations. Between 1920 and 1950, the old European tradition of “trick-or-treating” made a comeback in America and by the 1950s, Halloween had been firmly established as a holiday directed at children. Trick-or-treating and Halloween parties became common ways to celebrate the now-secular holiday, and indeed, these traditions continue to this day.

Your holiness matters.

In the Old Testament, the word “holy” doesn’t always refer to a moral state; often, it refers to a relationship. Cities are described as holy cities, vessels as holy vessels, and buildings as holy places. This means that they stood in a special relationship to God. And so it is in redemption: we have been placed in a special relationship to God. We have been set apart for a holy use.

There are “biblical” words that are not, in fact, in the Bible. For example, you will not find the word substitute in your Bible, and yet the word conveys the beauty of what happened when the Son of God died in the place of sinners. You will not find the word Trinity in the Scriptures either, and yet it represents true teaching about who God is. And the truth it captures is wondrous.
