Hydration Importance for Exercise/Sports

As the Fall sports season kicks off, it is imperative to note the importance of hydration for our athletes. Holzer Health System stresses that appropriate hydration before, during and after exercise is an important ingredient to healthy and successful sports participation.

Dr. Kelly Roush, Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician, Holzer Health System Sports Medicine Director, supplied the following information to help educate our communities on how to keep our children hydrated and healthy for the upcoming sports season.

Prolonged exposure to high temperatures, direct sun, and high humidity, without sufficient rest and fluids, puts everyone at risk for dehydration. However, in children, the difference is that a child's body surface area makes up a much greater proportion of his overall weight than an adult's, which means children face a much greater risk of dehydration and heat-related illness.

Early signs of dehydration include fatigue, thirst, dry lips and tongue, lack of energy, and feeling overheated. But if kids wait to drink until they feel thirsty, they're already dehydrated. Thirst doesn't really kick in until a child has lost two percent of his or her body weight as sweat.

For most exercising athletes, the ideal fluid for pre-hydration and re-hydration is water. Water is quickly absorbed, well tolerated, an excellent thirst quencher, and cost-effective. Traditional sports drinks with appropriate CHO and sodium may provide additional benefit when exercising over 45 minutes of continuous activity. Fruit juices with great than eight percent carbohydrate content and soda, beverages containing alcohol and/or carbonated or caffeine drinks are NOT good choices while exercising. Athletes should be aware that nutritional supplements are not limited to pills and powders; many of these new fluids contain stimulants such as caffeine and/or ephedrine. These stimulants alone increase the risk of heat illness problems when exercising.

Athletes should drink before, during and after practices and games. The American College of Sports Medicine recommends the following: 16 ounces of fluid two hours before exercise, eight to 16 ounces 15 minutes prior exercise and during exercising and four to 16 ounces of fluid every 15 to 20 minutes after exercise. In addition, one should drink 24 ounces of fluid for every pound lost during exercise to achieve normal fluid statue within six hours.

Untreated dehydration can lead to three types of heat illness: Heat cramps: Painful cramps of the abdominal muscles, arms, or legs; Heat exhaustion : sweaty, pale, cool, clammy skin, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, headache, weakness, muscle pain, and chills; and Heat stroke: A temperature of 104 or higher and severe symptoms, including nausea and vomiting, seizures, disorientation or delirium, lack of sweating, shortness of breath, unconsciousness, and coma.

Both heat exhaustion and heat stroke require immediate care. Heat stroke is a medical emergency that, when untreated, can be deadly. Any child with heat stroke should be rushed to the nearest hospital.
