Check out our second neighborhood hero in our series! Joanie Groome has long been a champion of inclusion in the Ithaca and Tompkins area. She’s the current YMCA adaptive and inclusion coordinator. One program of her’s, in particular, is the Adaptive Swim Program, which caters to the unique needs of children with disabilities. The program is important as rates of drowning incidents among children with disabilities have been too high. Prevention measures and water safety should be accessible to all families, so that they can have peace of mind when near water, especially here in New York, where naturally occurring bodies of water are abundant.
