Variety has released their 2025 Oscars nominations predictions, and The Ice Cream Man ranks #1 in the category of Live Action Short. We're not putting the cart before the horse, but this is great momentum heading into the nominations announcement on Thursday, January 23. Congrats to Director Robert Moniot and Producer Greg Malone, along with the entire cast and crew for the creation of this wonderful film, which apparently is capturing the attention of Hollywood. We're grateful to have played a part in its success!

For the past several years, Earshot's Rick Such has provided audio post mixing for a variety of shows on Outside TV, a streaming platform and cable/satellite television network that features outdoor lifestyle movies, series, and shorts. In 2024, Rick mixed Season 2 of the six-part series, PaddyO Sucks At. The show features O'Connell. With his enthusiasm for learning new things and his 6’5”, 250 pounds of questionably athletic mass, Paddy is like an average, outdoor enthusiast inflated way beyond average size. This show pairs him with coaches and mentors from different sports and activities, at which it’s doubtful he’ll excel, celebrating the one thing we can all relate to: being a beginner.

Check out the series here:

We learned today that The Ice Cream Man, a short film from director Rob Moniot and produced by Greg Malone, has advanced to a shortlist for nominee consideration for the 97th Academy Awards in the category of Live Action Short Film. 180 films qualified for this category, and The Ice Cream Man is now one of only 15 remaining for consideration.

Earshot’s Rick Such, Brice Bowman, and Haley Morkert played a big role in the film with audio post production duties, such as sound design, dialog editing, and mixing in both stereo and 5.1 surround. The film is now only one step away from being an Oscar nominated film!

Defending Their Ice: The Story of the U.S. Women’s National Team is a trailblazing six-episode docuseries produced by USA Hockey and Indianapolis-based RightHand. The series showcases the journey of the U.S. Women’s National Ice Hockey Team on the road to the 2024 IIHF Women’s World Championship, and offers a behind-the-curtain look at Team USA throughout the entirety of the 2023-24 season, starting from puck drop on game one of the Rivalry Series all the way to the final whistle of the Women’s World Championship gold medal game.

Earshot's Rick Such provided the sound design and mix for the series, with assistance from Haley Morkert. Being that much of the footage was shot reality-style, a big challenge with mixing was to resurrect much of the location audio.

Check out the premier episode of Defending Their Ice, which follows the U.S. Women’s National Team at the beginning of the 2023-24 season as they begin their journey towards the IIHF Women’s World Championship and takes you through the history of women’s hockey in the United States. The series also observes the skyrocketing growth and interest in the game, and looks back at its origins and adversities, along with the unwavering resilience of national team players past and present. For current members of the team, it becomes evident that the Women’s World Championship is not merely a tournament; it's a tribute to the countless women who have blazed the trail before them.

We’re excited to share a recent project that we had the pleasure of working on for Holiday World & Splashin' Safari 2024 campaign of their new Good Gravy! roller coaster. Partnering with our friends at Williams Randall Advertising, Ben Ericsen helped transform a classic, Thanksgiving song into a pop-punk hit with ride-themed lyrics. We connected them with Carmel, Indiana’s School of Rock to find the perfect 12-year old singer. The result? An energetic song featured in the Good Gravy! TV spots. We are thrilled to have played a part in this creative journey and to bring such a vibrant track to life.

Finding the right voice actor for your project can seem like an overwhelming task, but our goal is to help streamline the talent selection process with our ever-growing team of voice actors that you can access here at Earshot. Not only can we provide you with world class audio production, our team of voice actors are vetted, professional, and understand how to take direction and work with producers. Unlike the unwieldy, online talent sites who will accept anyone who pays for a roster spot, we're cautious about who we include on our team in an effort to provide only the best voice actors available. We've recently begun adding Spanish-speaking voice actors, with more to come in the future.

A few years ago, filmmaker Rob Moniot conducted a worldwide search for an early 1900’s ice cream parlor to set the scene for his new short movie, The Ice Cream Man. Based on actual events, the story takes place shortly after the N**i invasion of the Netherlands, when a popular Jewish ice cream parlor owner, Ernst Cahn, played by Noah Emmerich, finds himself targeted by the infamous “Butcher of Lyon,” Klaus Barbie. As his world crumbles, Ernst must choose between resistance and death; a choice that will reverberate throughout the country.

While the film is set in Amsterdam, Rob's search for an ice cream parlor from this time period came up empty. He then scouted ice cream shops in New York and L.A., but still no luck. So, he turned to a Google search and discovered the ideal setting: Zaharakos Ice Cream Parlor in Columbus, Indiana. Rob had never been to Indiana, so he reached out to Indianapolis based producer Greg Malone to assist with scouting and production efforts here in Indiana. Zaharakos was secured as a shooting location, and several key scenes were shot there.

An important piece of the production puzzle was audio post-production. Greg reached out to Earshot with the opportunity for us to provide sound design, dialogue editing, and the final mix. Brice Bowman and Haley Morkert began working on sound design elements, while Rick Such cleaned and leveled the location dialogue and also provided the final stereo mix - just in time for the film’s debut at the Indy Shorts Festival. The premier and an encore showing were both sellouts, and won the Indiana Spotlight Audience Choice award. The Ice Cream Man is slated to appear in upcoming film festivals in hopes of garnering an Academy Award nomination.

In 2021 and 2022, Earshot's Brice Bowman joined NBC's Olympics crew to provide audio mixing for dozens of features for the 2021 Summer Olympics in Tokyo and the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. NBC again tapped Brice to join their crew for this summer's Paris Olympics. Every day during the Olympics, he began a shift that started at 4:00 PM and ended at 2:00 AM. During this time, athlete and sponsorship features were sent to him, and once he delivered the final mix, some would go on the air to a national audience almost immediately. So, while you were cheering on the USA while watching NBC or any of their partner networks covering the summer games, you most likely heard Brice's work that was produced right here at Earshot.
