ROOF COLLAPSE CLOSES INDEPENDENCE GROCERY STORE
The Save-A-Lot grocery store in western Independence is closed indefinitely after the building’s roof collapsed early Thursday.
The roof of the store at Truman Road and Sterling Avenue collapsed before the store opened Thursday and no one was inside. Crews responded shortly after 5 a.m., according to the Independence Fire Department, and firefighters say they believe the drains from roof were clogged and the roof collapsed due the weight of rainwater from recent storms.

MoDOT REOPENS MISSOURI 291 IN INDEPENDNENCE: Missouri 291 in Independence was reopened to traffic Saturday. The section from Truman Road north to U.S. 24 – both directions – had been closed since late Thursday afternoon.

The Missouri Department of Transportation said the closure was caused by a crack in an underground mine that runs beneath the highway. MoDOT said it was acting out an abundance of caution.

“Experts completed their evaluation and inspection in the mine and determined the roadway could be reopened to traffic,” the agency said Saturday morning in a news release. “ MoDOT will continue to regularly monitor the mine for any changes.”

MAJOR ROAD CLOSURE IN EASTERN INDEPENDENCE: Missouri 291 is closed between U.S. 24 and Truman Road until further notice, due to a crack in the mine under the highway.

The closure is for both directions. The Missouri Department of Transportation announced the closure less than a half-hour before it started at 5 p.m. Thursday. MoDOT described the closure as precautionary.

The intersection of M-291 and Salisbury Road will remain open to local access traffic, MoDOT said in a release.

For through traffic, motorists on northbound M-291 will exit on Truman Road, and southbound motorists will exit at U.S. 24. There will be no signed detours. The nearest major north-south road is Lee's Summit Road, west of M-291.

How much data does your car collect?

There are things on this planet that somewhere deep inside we intuit but that the brain tunes out with a loud na-na-na-na-na. But in the end the truth cannot be denied. We all knew our cars were spying on us, right? And not just spying but tattling. Right? Remember “the internet of things,” wher...

Missouri third graders: 29.1% are BELOW basic standard on math, and 28.9% are below for English language arts. We have to do better.

The state of Missouri talks a good game about workforce development, but my observation would be that innovation and progress on that front have been mainly through local efforts, including many commendable programs in Eastern Jackson County. So maybe the best thing Jefferson City can do is focus on...
