Welcome to the Boise County! Here are a few tips to help visitors stay safe while recreating in our beautiful county.
1) There are some unique dangers in this county for visitors to be aware of. Among the many dangers are: bears, wolves, rattle snakes, moose, angry cows, sasquatches, river rapids, cliffs, remote mountains, skinny roads with death drops, roads that are not on google, and many more unknown dangers.
2) Keep in mind this is a rural county so emergency services might be a long ways off. You might have to go up or out (high on mountains, or out to service) to get cell services in many places. Emergency services might take hours to get to your location if you are lucky enough to be able to call out your location.
3) Pack at least minimum emergency supplies if you will be in the wilderness. A few suggested items to have along are, a fire device, extra water, sunscreen, blanket, cereal bars, flashlight, a whistle, and whatever else you think might aid in your plight for survival until help arrives.
4) Please don't block roads or gates as access to those areas might be needed for emergencies or fires.
5) Some streams and creeks still have very swift water so it's a good idea to keep a close eye on your family and your pets.
6) Please drink alcohol responsibly! Boise County has many natural DUI checkpoints in the form of wash boarded dirt road corners.
7) Please pack your trash out with you. We love our county and would like to keep it trash free for everyone to enjoy.
8) Please completely extinguish camp fires before leaving or going to bed.
9) Please be courteous and polite! The locals may or may not form strong opinions about visitors based on your behaviors.
10) Plan ahead for traffic conditions especially if you will be returning home on highway 17 through Banks.
11) Boise County non-emergency phone line (208) 392-4411. For emergencies dial 911.
Thank you,
Boise County Sheriff's Office

Construction of State Highway 21 Wildlife Overpass at Cervidae Peak Starts this Month
BOISE COUNTY – The next step in the long-range vision to improve motorist safety along State Highway 21, begins this month with construction of the Cervidae Peak Wildlife Overpass, between Lucky Peak and Idaho City at milepost 19.3.
A two-lane bypass road will allow motorist passage during construction, anticipated for completion in October 2023. Motorists can expect reduced speeds and periods of lane closures with flagger control
In conjunction with the existing wildlife underpass and fencing to the south, this project’s goal is to further reduce the number of wildlife-vehicle collisions while maintaining habitat connectivity for big game. Big game fencing on either side of the overpass will funnel wildlife to the crossing.
Its placement considers terrain, constructability, future maintenance, recreational needs and minimizing impairment of views from the road.
BACKGROUND
In 2010, the Idaho Transportation Department, (ITD) constructed a wildlife underpass on SH-21 at milepost 18.2. Game cameras monitoring that underpass show extensive use by mule deer, elk and other wildlife – all of which pose serious safety and mobility hazards to drivers if they were on the road. This also improved habitat linkage and landscape connectivity to the Boise River Wildlife Management Area and adjacent public lands of the Boise National Forest, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Idaho Department of Lands, City of Boise, and Bureau of Land Management.
As ITD developed the Cervidae Peak project, it received support from Idaho Department of Fish and Game, U.S. Forest Service, Army Corps of Engineers, the City of Boise, Ada and Boise Counties, numerous Non-Governmental Organizations, and the Western Federal Lands Highway Division (WFLHD) of the Federal Highways Division. Investment in these improvements supports the varied missions of these agencies to serve the citizens and taxpayers of Idaho.
STAY INFORMED
Please visit https://itdprojects.org/projects/cervidaeoverpass/ for up-to-date information. ITD appreciates your patience and reminds motorists to always drive with caution through construction areas.
