The Port of Huntsville airport’s board of directors recently applied for a $1 million grant to help establish nonstop air service to the New York City market.

The funds can be used to pay for programs like economic air service studies, revenue guarantees to air carriers that provide service, startup cost offsets and reimbursement of air carrier ground handling fees, according to the grant solicitation.

The grant application aligns with the airport’s strategic plan for the 2025 fiscal year, which includes pursuing nonstop service to the New York City area with current carriers American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines.

Russellville may seem like an unlikely home to investment and innovation for immigrant students.

The school district, like many around the country, struggled early on to accommodate the rising numbers of English learners, who were dropping out at high rates, being pushed into special education classes and showing little academic progress.

In early 2015, Russellville recruited Heath Grimes, then superintendent of the nearby Lawrence County school system, for the job.

But as Grimes’ star rose statewide, according to local educators and residents, his relationship with city leadership started to unravel.

The crossing in question lies within the city of Huntsville, and the tracks belongs to Norfolk Southern Railway, which operates 1,304 miles of track in Alabama and employs over 1,500 people in the state.

The northbound lane of Slaughter Road has a “Rough Crossing 15 mph” sign just before the crossing, which is on a slight rise.

According to Norfolk Southern communications manager Heather Garcia, the railroad has recently resurfaced the crossing and will soon remove the “Rough Crossing” sign.

Events drew 15 million visitors to Huntsville’s downtown last year, according to data from the organization that serves as the host to many of the activities.

“That is a 3% year-over-year increase over 2022, and a 5.2% year-over-year increase from 2021.” Downtown Huntsville CEO Rob Buddo told the Huntsville City Council at a meeting in July.

In addition to helping to host events like the state volleyball tournament and Tinsel Trail, Downtown Huntsville Inc had over six food truck rallies last year that averaged about 4,500 attendees per event.

Soda fountains are uniquely American, they recall a simpler, bygone time and they provide the good, old-fashioned fun of enjoying ice cream treats with friends.

A number of old-timey soda fountains still exist – the kind with marble bar tops and sundae glasses that serve thick shakes, maltes and, in some cases, even egg creams.

Payne’s in Scottsboro is Alabama’s oldest soda fountain, opening in 1869. In 1939, an addition made it “the largest soda fountain ever in this county,” the local newspaper said at the time.

A metal sign, brick-red in color, is stored in the Morgan County Archives awaiting its placement in Decatur to honor one of its most interesting and best-known Black community leaders, Daisy Nolan.

The marker, made possible through the Alabama Folklife Foundation and a grant from the Pomeroy Legends and Lore Program, tells, briefly, of the African American woman who was at once revered and misunderstood.

Morgan County Archivist John Allison says the sign will be installed in fall 2024 or spring 2025 to bring attention to one of Decatur’s most intriguing tales and one of its most famous and wealthiest Black women.

As the airport closes the books on its fiscal year, it plans to contribute nearly $10 million to its capital improvement fund, driven by a year of surging passenger and cargo traffic.

Overall at Huntsville International Airport, the year was, “very positive, and hopefully it’ll continue moving forward next year in the same regard,” CEO Butch Roberts said.
