SEVENTY YEARS AGO TODAY...
..music was changed forever. 7/5/54 - ELVIS PRESLEY had his first official recording session at Sun Records.

Elvis had dropped by the Memphis Recording Service at Sun in July of the previous year, where back then, you could actually make a record yourself and take it home. He recorded two songs (supposedly for his mom's birthday), then came back in January of 1954 and did two more. Label owner, Sam Phillips, got wind of this aspiring singer and saw some potential in him, suggesting he team with guitarist Scotty Moore and bassist Bill Black.

The previous night (7/4/54), Scotty & Bill got together with Elvis for a rehearsal, and were both not impressed. Then, the next day, they went into Sun. Elvis ran through a couple ballads, "I Love You Because," and "Harbor Lights," that was the common music of the day. No one seemed enthusiastic.

Then Elvis, goofing between takes, dove into "That's All Right (Mama)," an Arthur "Big Boy" Cruddup song from a few years earlier, and Scotty and Bill quickly joined in. Phillips asked everyone to start over, so he could record it...and the rest is history.

The juiced-up tempo and lyrics gave birth to rock n' roll. Phillips took the acetate to a local radio station, and the response was immediate. About a week later, the song was a regional smash, and Elvis was on his way to being a star.

AES has restored power to the Huber Center and we are back up and running!

Update: Our operations are being affected by a power outage at the Huber Center. Without power at the studio, we are unable to broadcast on both 97.3 FM and online. AES is currently saying it will be two to four hours for them to get a crew on site and assess the situation.
