Ohio Woman Expresses Regret for Spreading False Facebook Rumor About Haitians

A woman from Ohio has removed a Facebook post in which she wrongly suggested that a Haitian neighbor may have taken a cat belonging to someone in the area. The post, however, quickly spiraled beyond her control.

Erika Lee made the post on an ordinary summer day in Springfield, Ohio. At the time, the city hadn't yet been caught up in the presidential race or the false claims being spread by former President Donald Trump about Haitian immigrants allegedly kidnapping and eating pets. Those rumors, stoked by Trump, eventually led to bomb threats and unrest in the town of 60,000.

Ms. Lee heard a rumor that a cat had gone missing and shared it on Facebook, implying that a Haitian neighbor might be responsible. After seeking more information from the neighbor, she realized the claim was unfounded and removed the post. However, by then, the rumor had already spread and was picked up by right-wing circles, including by Trump's running mate, JD Vance.

Trump later repeated the false claim during a debate with Vice President Kamala Harris, further escalating tensions in Springfield. He claimed, “In Springfield, they’re eating the pets of the people that live there.”

Ms. Lee, now 35, has since expressed regret, stating that she never intended to stir racial tensions. “I was not raised with hate,” she said emotionally, adding that her family is biracial.

Local authorities have debunked the rumors, confirming no reports of pet theft or consumption in Springfield. Despite this, Trump's remarks fueled a surge in anti-immigrant sentiment, leading to bomb threats targeting schools, hospitals, and other public buildings.

There were also rumors that the incident might be linked to an unrelated case in Canton, Ohio, where a woman, Allexis Telia Ferrell, was found near a dead cat. Despite claims that Ferrell was Haitian, records show she was born in Ohio. Ferrell faces charges of animal cruelty, and her trial is pending.

While many residents, like Floyd Walden, continue to believe the rumors, local officials and Haitian immigrants are facing the fallout. One Haitian resident, Mary Clovis, reported feeling unsafe after being harassed in the community.

Ms. Lee deeply regrets her involvement in spreading the rumor and wishes she could undo the damage it caused. "I live next to Haitians — I have no issues with them," she said. "I hate myself for making that post."
