Women In Music

Hildegard of Bingen (German: Hildegard von Bingen;
Latin: Hildegardis Bingensis; born in 1098, died September 17, 1179). She was also known as Saint Hildegard and the Sibyl of the Rhine, and was a German Benedictine abbess, writer, composer, philosopher, Christian mystic, visionary, and polymath of the High Middle Ages.

She is one of the best-known composers of sacred monophony, as well as the most-recorded in modern history. She has been considered by many in Europe to be the founder of scientific natural history in Germany.

She was born into the free nobility of Rheinhessen. When she was eight her parents, Hildebert and Mechthild of Bermersheim, promised her to the Church, and when she was 14 bound her over to the newly constructed Benedictine monastery at nearby Disibodenberg. She entered a stone cell (a ‘tomb’) with Jutta von Spanheim (1092–1136), who came from another powerful and wealthy local family. Their vows were received by Bishop Otto of Bamberg on All Saints’ Day, 1112.

WOMEN IN MUSIC

Kassia (aka: Kasia, Cassia, Eikasia, Ikasia, Kasianē, Kassianē, Kassiani), Byzantine-Greek composer and hymnographer, was born 81 CE, into a wealthy family associated with the imperial court in Constantinople.

She received a sophisticated education, studied classical Greek literature and was once considered as a possible bride for the Emperor Theophilus. After rejecting the hand of the Emperor, Kassia became a nun at a convent in Xerolophos, Constantinople’s seventh hill.

She became a prolific poet and composer. Of the hundreds of hymn composers from the Eastern Church, only four women can be positively identified and only one of these –Kassia -- had her works incorporated into official service books for use in church worship.

More than 50 liturgical works have been attributed to Kassia, the majority of them stichēra. Her most famous composition in this genre is the hymn Augoustou monarchēsantos (‘Augustus was reigning’) for Hesperinos on Christmas Day; its melody was so well known in medieval Byzantium that it was mentioned in the chronicles. Words and music are closely interlinked in this hymn.

Karankawa Native American peoples were part of Texas' great history, where they lived primarily on the stretch of Texas' eastern coast. Evidenced by a Texas Historical Marker on Galveston Island, Karankawa were spread wide among the Gulf Coast.
Music played a pivotal role within their lives and cultures. Much of their music incorporates their history. Karankawa music was similar to other native American music, in that they used percussion and reed instruments. Some specific musical instruments include flutes, tom-tom drums, tambourines and other hand-shaking instruments.

Native American music, like the Karankawa's, has strong holds throughout existing Native American communities to this day. While taking influences from hip hop, rock, and other genres, many musicians still use the stories told from the generations before.

The black-tailed prairie dog is a "keystone" species in the short- and mixed-grass prairie ecosystems, which has been documented extensively by biologists. These animals wield unparalleled ecological importance in the Great Plains.

This industrious creature enriches habitat through burrowing activities in ways that benefit a multitude of other prairie species. Some wildlife use their burrows as homes or as refuge from predators, and some prey on prairie dogs and other species inhabiting prairie dog towns. The way prairie dogs graze and dig improves soil and vegetation quality, increases water concentration and contributes to the overall plant and animal diversity in and around colonies.
