Caribbean Airlines will increase its service to Dominica from its base in Trinidad and Tobago starting next April 7 according to the Dominica Ministry of Tourism Colin Piper.

[Translated Article: https://www.prensa-latina.cu/2023/03/10/caribbean-airlines-aumentara-su-servicio-a-dominica]

Caribbean Airlines began operations on January 1, 2007, and is wholly owned by the Government of Trinidad and Tobago, which acquired Air Jamaica in 2010, when it also appears as that nation's flag carrier.

The company operates international destinations in the Caribbean, the United States, Canada, and South America.

The region is experiencing a difficult situation in terms of transportation caused by the closure in 2020 during the Covid-19 period of Leeward Islands Air Transport (LIAT).

The measure, without establishing a replacement for that airline, seriously affected the movement of people and goods.

Connectivity from one Caribbean island to another, physically neighboring, often requires moving to Miami, Florida, the United States, or some other country, which lengthens the journey and increases costs, experts warn.

Caribbean Airlines does not have enough planes or frequency of trips to meet the needs, while only flying to some destinations, they said.

The return flight on Fridays not only increases the options to visit the country, but also favors three US states, explained the entity's director, Colin Piper.

Transportation now goes from two weekly frequencies, with an increase of 68 seats or 33 percent, explained the executive, who highlighted the current operations on Mondays and Thursdays.

According to Piper, the transfer is carried out in ATR 72 aircraft and explained that travelers can leave the US territory of New York at 07:30 local time on Friday and arrive in Dominica at 18:45 on the same day.

EU lifts Anguilla, Dominica, Seychelles from tax blacklist. BRUSSELS (AP) — The European Union removed Anguilla, Dominica and Seychelles from its tax haven blacklist Tuesday amid criticism that the trade bloc is letting countries off the hook, particularly in light of the recent Pandora Papers revelations.

Anguilla, Dominica and Seychelles were placed on the list because they did not meet tax transparency criteria. EU finance ministers, meeting in Luxembourg, endorsed a decision to move them to a “grey list” after the three agreed to a review of their tax systems.

The EU blacklist was set up in 2017 to tackle rampant tax evasion and is regularly updated. Nine “jurisdictions” remain listed as “non-cooperative:” American Samoa, Fiji, Guam, Palau, Panama, Samoa, Trinidad and Tobago, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Vanuatu.

Anguilla, Dominica and Seychelles are now listed as places that do not yet comply with all international tax standards but have committed to the principles of good tax governance. Costa Rica, Hong Kong, Malaysia, North Macedonia, Qatar and Uruguay were also added to this “grey list.” Australia, Eswantini and Maldives were removed from it after reforming their tax systems.

The International Consortium of Investigative Journalists and its media partners recently published a massive leak of offshore data dubbed the “Pandora Papers.” The cache of almost 12 million files sheds light on the financial activities of many members of the global elite.

French EU lawmaker Aurore Lalucq, who authored a report on harmful tax practices, said she hopes the disclosures “will finally be a loud enough wake-up call for EU leaders” and the European Commission to urgently reform the bloc’s code of conduct for business taxation.

Some of the world’s most notorious tax havens are not even listed by the EU, Lalucq said in a statement. “Sadly, the countries that remain black-listed do not represent the most important financial flows,” she said.

Chiara Putaturo, the tax expert at charity group Oxfam, described the EU blacklist as “a joke” and said it should “should penalize tax havens. Instead, it lets them off the hook.” She alleged that Anguilla and Seychelles “are at the heart of the latest tax scandal.”

“While the Pandora Papers investigation blew the lid on how the super-rich continue to use tax havens to avoid paying their taxes, ordinary people are asked to foot the COVID-19 recovery bill,” Putaturo said.

10/22/2021

Spain’s highest criminal court has agreed to extradite Venezuela’s former intelligence chief, Hugo Carvajal, to the U.S., where he faces drug trafficking charges. The decision comes after Carvajal was denied asylum in Spain. The Spanish authorities first detained Carvajal on the American extradition request in April 2019 after he fled to Spain, but he was then released from prison after a court deemed the extradition request to be too “abstract” to prove his involvement in drug trafficking. Carvajal was a prominent figure in Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro’s government before he broke with him in February 2019 by accusing Maduro of running a corrupt dictatorship. According to charges filed in federal court in New York, the U.S. Department of Justice stated that Carvajal coordinated the transportation of about six tons of co***ne to Mexico from Venezuela. Raphael Minder reports for the NThe New York Times

Hugo Carvajal, once a prominent figure in the government of the Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro, faces drug-trafficking charges in the United States.
