Stay safe and stay warm tonight!

ABC13 WEATHER ALERT: The fun part of our winter storm is ending and the really hazardous phase arrives overnight. Icy roadways and a pipe-bursting hard freeze are predicted overnight with lows in the teens. (And peep that low in the single digits around Lake Charles!)

Two things to be mindful of regarding icy conditions.

1. PLEASE be careful when stepping outside on the porch or patio in the morning. We don't want any avoidable injuries due to slips and falls.

2. Try to stay off the roads in those regions where you picked up multiple inches of snow. There is a lot of slushy and melted snow on area roadways that will refreeze into an icy glaze overnight. Sometimes it looks like the road is dry when it's really covered in a slick patch of ice, which you often hear us refer to as black ice.

Be wise, make good decisions, love your neighbor, and stay warm tonight!

BREAKING: A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for all of Southeast Texas from 6PM Monday to 6PM Tuesday. The National Weather Service is predicting 3” of snow and sleet accumulations with locally higher amounts, along with up to a tenth of an inch of ice from freezing rain. Travel conditions will be hazardous on Tuesday, and most bridges and overpasses could become impassable. The same will be true for many side streets. Plan accordingly!

This week you'll want to stay looped into the forecast as it is looking more likely that a major arctic cold front will visit Texas over the MLK Day weekend.

Current status at 1PM of the winter storm over Texas. Heavy snow is falling from I-20 up to the Red River with a mix of freezing rain and sleet over parts of the Hill Country.

Meanwhile, a coastal low is kicking up the wind over Southeast Texas and generating heavy rain southwest of town. Look for that heavier rain to start impacting Houston in the 2PM hour with the rain, wind, and chilly temps continuing through the night.

ABC13 Eyewitness News has a new member of our meteorology team! Elyse Smith made her debut on Eyewitness News at 11am, with a special welcome greeting, straight from Ginger Zee!

Showers and storms continue to decrease. No more severe weather is expected, but a shower or weak storm may continue through about 7:00 or 8:00 this morning. We're tracking the rain on ABC 13.

Here is an update on the tornado watch until 7:00 p.m. for Liberty, Polk, and San Jacinto Counties. No storms are in the area and the severe weather threat is likely to stay farther east into Louisiana. We'll have an update on ABC 13 News at 5:30 this evening.

We are tracking showers moving east across Harris County and Southeast Texas. Showers should move out of Harris County by around noon to 1 p.m., but you will see light to moderate rain for up to an hour and maybe wind gusts up to 40 mph in spots

Lightning and rain may keep you awake for a while tonight. A cold front is pushing a line of thunderstorms southeast across Harris County and Southeast Texas. The threat for strong winds and hail are lowering...but heavy rainfall of 2 to 3 inches in some areas may cause street flooding. Storms will move into the Gulf later tonight.
