We remember film critic and Yale alumnus Gene Siskel '67 on what would have been his 75th birthday. The Siskel family has made numerous generous donations to the Yale Film Archive over the years, including funding to acquire four 35mm prints of films by Ingmar Bergman. The specially-commissioned prints were struck from original negatives at the Swedish Film Institute and screened in 2018 as part of an eight-film tribute to Bergman on the occasion of the director's centenary. The family also gave the Archive the priceless gift of more than 150 interviews Siskel conducted in the '70s, '80s, and '90s with filmmakers including John Cassavetes, Mel Brooks, Warren Beatty, Milos Forman, Stanley Kubrick, and Katharine Hepburn, as well as Yale’s own Meryl Streep, Jennifer Beals, Jodie Foster, and Paul Newman (who shared Siskel's January 26 birthday). Siskel's innumerable contributions to film culture endure, at Yale and beyond.

"Love. Fall in love and stay in love. Write only what you love, and love what you write. The key word is love. You have to get up in the morning and write something you love, something to live for."

"We only have control over our minds and our hearts--these are things we can actively and continually improve and enlarge and inspire. I'm always hearing people talk about improving the world and the theatre and the city and the people in their lives, and we have to begin with ourselves. If everyone worked on believing and living well, we would have all the things of which we dream, and we would have a society, a culture, a world, a theatre that reflected the believing, caring people we had become. I approach every person and I look for and I find the good person they are, and that is who becomes my friend, and I am never disappointed. And we have a lovely relationship. That's where it starts--the student; the friend; the stranger on the street or the subway. It starts with love, of course. Love of that other person; love of the world; love of the self; love of what will come from all this love.'--Marian Seldes/Interview with James Grissom (Photo by Dan Winters)

IIC is pleased to present rediscovered images from the set of Fellini's Oscar winning film 8½ for the first time in North America.

After years in photographer Paul Ronald’s attic, these photographs are being shared for the 100th anniversary celebration of Federico Fellini. Armed with a Hasselblad camera, the photographer brilliantly captured the atmosphere, set breaks, characters and scenes of what would become one of Fellini’s masterpieces.

Due to COVID, this exhibit is being presented online with a video tour found here: bit.ly/3m3Lky0
