My partner Harri and I celebrated the holidays vastly differently growing up. I had what he would call the “stereotypical white household” experience with turkey and Christmas lights and gifts under the tree. Harri, a second-generation non-trinitarian Filipino from Kalihi, didn’t celebrate the holidays at all.

Interestingly, Harri and I both ended up with careers in the restaurant business after graduating high school, and the idea of celebrating holidays, whether part of family tradition or not, became obsolete.

Do you have to celebrate the holidays just because you were raised to do so?

This is the question I explored in today’s Opinion piece: The Holidays Aren’t For Everyone on kapionews.com (link in bio)

Every year Hawaiʻi culinary students have the opportunity to volunteer at Hawaiʻi Food & Wine Festival to learn from and network with top industry professionals.

The Hawaii Food & Wine Festival is not only for food and wine loving patrons, it is a time of gathering for industry professionals to reconnect and celebrate each other’s work. More than that, it is an opportunity for culinary students around Hawaiʻi to meet, and work alongside, some of the world’s most revered chefs, offering them an entryway into the next phase of their careers.

“They want the opportunity to go stage (try out) in someoneʻs restaurant after they finish,” Denise Yamaguchi said. “We have chefs from all over the world that come and participate [at the festival] and that becomes an opportunity for them.”

Today, we celebrate Lā Kūʻokoʻa.

Here are some images from Tuesday’s festivities on campus.

We began with protocol - singing Hawai`i Pono`ī - afterward we dropped our t-shirts off for silkscreening, pounded pa’i’ai and listened to a presentation on the significance of this day. We also got to taste Po`e Mei`a - A Tahitian dessert made by with mai`a, cassava and coconut milk or coconut cream. Mahalo to everyone who participated and led this event in making it so special.

On November 28, 1843, the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi was officially recognized as an independent nation by the British and French governments. Today, Hawai`i observes this day as Lā Kūʻokoʻa (Hawaiian Independence Day).

This Tuesday, 11/26, KCC will observe Lā Kūʻokoʻa with festivities on campus from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Events include:

8:30 AM – Protocol: Anthem & Flag Ceremony (Location: Navigational Compass & Great Lawn)

9:00 AM – Free T-Shirt silk screening. Advanced registration is required-link in today’s IG Story (Location: Māmane 103)

10:00 AM – Kuʻi Kalo Demonstration/ pa`i`ai pounding (Location: Manono/Mānele Breezway)

10:30 AM – Featured Presentation by KCC Hawaiian Studies Faculty (Location: Manono 101)

This collaboration with the Kūloaʻa Project, Kapoʻoloku, Kūlia ma Kapiʻolani, and ʻAha Kalāualani serves as an opportunity for students to reflect upon, learn about, and celebrate Hawaiian resiliency.

In her 2023-2029 strategic plan, Chancellor Misaki Takabayashi stressed, “We will own our kuleana to Native Hawaiians and Hawaiʻi, as a foundational principle.”

“Our students need to be globally competitive, so they need to be globally aware,” the Chancellor said yesterday at Kuka`i Mahalo, an event hosted by KCC’s Kūloaʻa Project. “But they need to be rooted to Hawai`i.”

The Strategic Plan also shares KCCʻs vision to be “a model indigenous serving institution” and mission “To honor ʻāina, ʻōiwi, and the legacy of Queen Kapiʻolani.” For this, the KCC is “committed to teaching, learning, and practicing Hawaiian values and culture.”

The Culinary Institute of the Pacific builds upon KCC’s two-year culinary arts program, enabling students to pursue a baccalaureate degree of Applied Science in culinary management. Anyone can attend the school to earn advanced professional certificates and/or take short-term professional/continuing education courses.

CIP is located at 4500 Diamond Head Rd. It consists of two kitchen labs built in 2017 (phase 1) and a new innovation center, restaurant and auditorium still under construction (phase 2).

Chef Roy Yamaguchi was hired in January as Executive Director to lead the project into this new phase. Chef Yamaguchi is a James Beard Award-winning chef and co-founder of Hawaiʻi Regional Cuisine who has opened over 30 of his namesake worldwide.

“As the executive director, what I’m trying to do is create a vision for the future of the Culinary Institute of the Pacific campus,” Yamaguchi said in an interview at CIP in September. “We want to create a world-class culinary campus for excellence.”

Do you have a job lined up after college? How about a plan for how your career will unfold? Most of us don’t and the reality is that after we graduate, we are on our own. It’s up to us to figure out what we are going to do next and how to get there.

But what if you could figure all that out BEFORE you graduate? What if you can start working in your field now?

Student career specialist Monty Clark arrived at KCC in July. The school hadn’t had anyone in that position for four years before he started. Who is Monty Clark? He’s the guy who’s going to help you figure out what you want in life and how to get it.

The best part is, he is on campus every day available to advise students one on one in ʻIliahi 231. Just email [email protected] to set up a time to meet.

Monty hosts regular career planning workshops at KCC that cover:
- Resume and Cover Letter writing
- How to design your ideal life
- How to find the right company for you and nail the interview

He also implemented - a free platform KCC students can use for free to find job postings.

Upcoming events:

Nov. 15 - Virtual career fair (on Handshake) featuring over 30 companies looking to hire students ready to work.

Feb. 19-21 - In-person career fair (KCC library) to meet with industry professionals from information technology, business accounting and hospitality sectors + workshops teaching resume building and interviewing skills. Students will also have the opportunity to take a personality test called True Colors, similar to Myers-Briggs, to help them find careers that would be a good fit for their innate skills and sensibilities. The event will be especially helpful for students who are still figuring out what they want to do.
