Good morning! Good morning! Good morning!

Schedule is a little bit off today because my daughter has an appointment.

Does anyone else have that same issue?

Does a schedule change throw you off a little, or maybe it’s just me? 🤷🏾‍♀️

No matter what, just keep going!

“Strike while the iron is hot.”

This is one of those sayings our elders used to tell us . It means to do what needs to be done the moment it comes to our attention. Why?

Because life…shifts happen.

The world is always shifting and changing and will not wait for us to catch up. So take care of the priorities first and work your way down the list.

Priorities are critical things needed for your life. Bills, food, homework, work assignments, scheduling doctors appointments…

Maybe it’s just me…🤷🏾‍♀️

Strike while the iron is hot! I promise it’s worth it!

Stay Sweet 🐝 Joyful

Hey! Hey! Hey!

Have you gotten your green time today?

According to research, being out in nature has tons of health benefits! Especially especially for us that struggle with ADHD.

Here’s a list of some of those benefits:

- Improvements to short-term memory
- Reduced stress levels and lower levels of stress hormones that affect heart health and weight
- Improvement in eyesight (mostly among children)
- Improved immune function
- Improvements to mental health like decreased risks for depression and anxiety
- Increased natural Vitamin D production, which is linked to improved health outcomes

Soooo! Go outside!

Okay love yah, bye!

Stay Sweet! Bee Joyful!

In case anyone else needed this reminder. You are enough!

Sometimes when you start feeling a little down and feeling like things aren’t going the way you would like and that feeling of feeling inadequate set in, you just need a reminder 🩷

Life is full of choices, and the life that you live is an almagamation of the choices that you make.

I remember going on a cross-country family vacation to San Diego, California to see my father’s people for Christmas. We made several stops and one of them was to visit a cousin in Texas. She lived in a literal dollhouse. Every room had dolls of every race and culture. As a young girl of 12 or 13 I still of course played with dolls. I remember the awe I felt at all their beautiful dresses and the giggle that escaped my lips when she pulled the string on the Steve Urkel doll and he said, “did I do that?”

As is customary in most Black families, the elder member wanted to gift something to the children before we headed to our next location. So, we all went to the local Toys R Us and looked for a gift for my younger sister and I. She chose the current holiday Barbie. I don’t remember which two dolls I had fallen in love with, but I remember being stuck between these two beautiful yet different choices.

“Can I have both?” I was 12. I was a 12-year-old girl at crossroad of sorts, and I asked an innocent question that led to my parents’ outrage and embarrassment, and ultimately, to my being shamed. I don’t remember what my parents said but I believe the words selfish and ungrateful were sprinkled in there. Now, I understand WHY they were upset, but the choice they made was to punish me for asking an innocent question. They were only trying to teach me how to be polite, I get it. But ultimately, I ended up with nothing but the feeling of shame.

Now I know what you’re thinking, you must have broken a rule or something. Well, I have no memory of there being a “you can only have one toy” briefing. No memory of, “when someone offers you something you chose the least expensive” lesson. These lessons are not on the top of my most memorable lessons. The lesson I do remember is that making choices are hard and if you don’t make a choice, you lose both choices.

Hard lesson to learn as a child. It wasn’t the first time, nor would it be the last. There was the time when I had the chance to go to the world of Coca Cola with my favorite cousins. But I couldn’t choose whether to stay home and play or to go with them. So, I ended up staying behind. Consolation prize, a small sermon on not being “double-minded”. The difference between this lesson and the one prior was a gentler tone was used.

There was the time I couldn’t chose between boyfriends. A boyfriend and a fiancé, peace of mind and an abusive husband.

And that was the first time someone taught me how to sit down and write to decide how to make my choice.

Make a pro and a con list. Whichever side has the most is the side you go with. Then later in my military career, I learned how to make the list and assign each item with an importance rating. A: for the most important and B and C for the next in line. The difference between this lesson and the previous, they gave me a practical tool to help me to make the best choice for me.

Years later I was diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 32, right after my daughter was diagnosed at the age of 8.
ADHD means, among other things, theres a difference in the processing of the executive functioning part of the brain. Executive functioning consists of these 8 fields:

1. Impulse control, 2. Emotional control, 3. Flexible thinking, 4. Working memory, 5. Self-monitoring, 6. Planning and prioritizing, 7. Task initiation, and 8. Organization.

Guess what: making a choice falls under planning and prioritizing. What I needed wasn’t a lecture on etiquette, or a sermon on not being double minded, what I needed was for someone to teach me that life is about choices and sometimes those choices are hard to make. Not only that, I needed to learn how to make my choices, on my own, without them being taken away out of frustration or natural consequences stepping in.

Fast forward to when my son was given the choice between prizes and he asked, can I have both, I smiled, “sorry buddy, you can only have one, choose which one you like the best.” I could see his face scrunch up as a look of frustration grew on his face. So, I made it easier for him; “left, or right?”. I switched the gifts around behind my back and he chose right and loved the surprise all the more. The other item went back in the treasure box unseen. There’s also, heads or tails, eenie-meanie-minie-moe…. these are all great ways of helping kids chose when the choices are equally enticing. When they are older teach them how to make a pro vs con list, or a priority list. There are several age-appropriate tools to help them learn how to choose. Don’t take the choice away from them but help them to choose what’s best for them because it's something they're going to have to do for the majority of their lives.

As always,

Stay Sweet!

Ugh! The struggle is real!!! I’m a people lover, a problem solver, and I think outside the box. I just happen to sometimes struggle with ADHD symptoms.

I literally wake up, say “what-up” to God and my mind is running 1,000 bps. After that, it’s my mouth that’s running a 1,000 bps. I love connecting to the people around me. Learning about who they are, what makes them tick, and yes, I am analysing you while your behavior, but don’t freak out because later I will be over-analysing everything I said and did, lol!

Who would have guessed the girl that used to get written up for talking in class would grow up and talk to people for a living. Now I just need to get over my fear of talking to large groups of people in public. I said all that to say this…

You may have a quirk that people seem to zero in on, maybe even in a negative manner. When you finally sit down to be quiet, away from the noise of what everyone else said or thought, you just might find out what you’re good at. Finding out what you’re good at can lead you to a plethora of “good thangs”. And that honey is why God gave you that quirk!

It’s all about perspective. Flip that quirk and make it work!

Happy Friday Lovebugs! Get out there and be the great somebody God made you to be!

Remember, you are loved and everyday is a new day for Joyful Possibilities.

This is relatable! 🙋‍♂️🙋‍♀️
