BB moves to condemn Pines Trailer Park, cites FEMA
In an Oct. 17 meeting at Bradenton Beach City Hall, city commissioners and officials addressed the need damages at island trailer parks following the destruction caused by Hurricanes Helene and Milton.
The area, a low-lying mobile home park established in the 1930s, suffered significant flooding during Hurricane Helene, submerging low-lying properties in more than three feet of water.
The situation was worsened by Hurricane Milton, which brought 110 mph winds to the region in early October. Local officials, in consultation with FEMA, determined that the Pines Trailer Park and the Sandpiper Mobile Resort Community was “substantially damaged” under FEMA guidelines, making them unfit for habitation and the properties would need to meet modern flood plain codes for rebuild.
City officials said under FEMA requirements, many of the mobile homes in the Pines would need to be elevated 8-10 feet, a task deemed financially and structurally unfeasible by Bradenton Beach city building official Darin Cushing.
Residents, many of whom have lived in the park for decades, voiced their confusion and frustration at the news, fearing the loss of their homes.
Cushing said the issue of flood damage was widespread and will affect other coastal mobile home communities that saw flood damage, including but not limited to Sunny Shores, Cortez Trailer Park Co-Op, Pines Trailer Park and Sandpiper Mobile Resort.
