Alqualondë (n.)

(Q.) ‘Haven of the Swans’ (or ‘The Haven’) from alqua- ‘swan’ and -londë ‘land-locked haven’. The walled, chief city of the Falmari Elves on the shores of Aman, north and east of Tirion between the Calacirya and Araman in northern Eldamar and right on top of Eressëa.

It was built in a natural harbor made of rock with an entrance of an arch of living stone, and was decorated with pearls. It also housed the Tower of Olwë, and was always alive with song even after the death of the Two Trees when Valinor became silent. Before the kinslaying, it was known as one of the most peaceful and tranquil places in Aman being synonymous with elven bliss.

Gollum (n.) born in 2430 TA and is a creature who obtained the One Ring. By obtaining the One Ring, his lifespan would be preserved until the moment of the Ring’s destruction.

He was the most inquisitive and curious minded of his family and is believed to be a Stoor. He would would wear it until it tired him, and so he would keep it in a pouch and later hide it in a hole in the rock of an island. He would put it on when he couldn’t bear to be parted from it, or hungry, or tired of fish, which he loved. He would also creep along dark passages to look for stray goblins.

Soon after it would be the Ring, his “precious” which decided things. He loved that the Ring granted him invisibility.

He was most known for his desire of the One Ring in two instances: (1) when Bilbo found it in The Hobbit, and (2) when Frodo took it to Mount Doom in Lord of the Rings.

Gildor (n.)

(S.) ‘star-lord’ from gil- ‘star’ and -dor ‘lord, king’. A Noldorin Elf of the House of Finrod.

He rejoiced after Frodo’s greeting, “Elen síla lúmen omentielvo” (a star shines at the hour of our meeting) as the hobbits spent the night above Woodhall. Initially he didn’t want to give advice on getting to Rivendell, but after Frodo’s insistence, Gildor asked him to rely mainly on Gandalf’s counsel while acknowledging the decision is left up to Frodo.

It was also said that he went on the last ship west, as he was seen again at the end of Return of the King.

Melian (n.) a Maia of the race of the Valar, the most powerful and skilled in singing enchanting songs. She served Vana and Estë and lived mainly in Lórien initially, though she was most like Yavanna.

After the Elves awoke, Melian went back to Middle-earth and sang as the chief of the guardians. She married Thingol, and they had a daughter Lúthien and later hosted Turin.

Her name is Sindarin and came from the Quenya name Melyanna, meaning “dear gift.”

Erendis (n.) the Queen of Númenor and the wife of Tar-Aldarion the King.

Erendis was born in 771 SA to Beregar and Nuneth, from a branch of the Númenoreans in the House of Bëor - a different lineage than her husband leading to her shorter lifespan. They lived in Emerië.

Erendis is a Noldorin name; her “right” (Quenya) name is Tar-Elestirnë meaning ‘Lady of the Star-brow.’

While initially hesitant, Erendis would eventually marry Aldarion and they would have a daughter. During Aldarion’s voyages, Erendis had been staying with Ancalimë in Emerië, and would make her accustomed to the society of women there, the cool, quiet gentle life without interruptions or alarms.

She would grow estranged from her husband due to her unhappiness with Aldarion’s voyages. However, it is said that at old age, Erendis would long once more for Aldarion and she would leave Emerië after hearing of his last voyage.

While it was not known how she died, “she met her fate; but only the words ‘Erendis perished in water in the year 985’ remain to suggest how it came to pass.” (Fall of Númenor, “The Wedding of Aldarion and Erendis”)

Aldarion (n.) the sixth king of Númenor and the son of Tar-Meneldur the King. Aldarion loved ships and the Sea and built the Guild of Venturers to go on voyages in his ship, much to the dismay of his wife, Erendis, who had a shorter lifespan due to not being of the Line of Elros and didn’t like the Sea.

Aldarion was born in SA 700 in Forester. His love of the sea started from his youth, and this love caused numerous strains with his father, though he had a better relationship with the other members of the family, especially Vëantur his grandfather, with whom he would go on his first voyage to Númerramar with. Aldarion would also develop close friendships with Gil-galad and Círdan the Shipwright.

While the meaning is not glossed, it is suggested by Paul Strack that it is from aldar- ‘tree’ and -ion ‘son,’ though his right name was Anardil, which meant anar- ‘sun’ and -(n)dil ‘friend.’
