⬇️
Exciting News for Stevenson Learning Skills!
A wonderful new non-profit organization, The Need to Read, will be taking over the distribution and development of the Stevenson Reading Program starting in September of 2024. This non-profit will continue to provide the Stevenson resources that already exist, HOWEVER, the materials are being updated and new valuable digital content will be available.
Currently the Stevenson Language Skills Program is limited to books, but, The Need To Read (TNTR) will offer much more in the way of on-line options for instruction, training and support. TNTR will not abandon paper and pencil, but in the future, “blended” instruction will be common.
Teachers and schools do not need to change their summer ordering for Stevenson materials, but you should also be ready for new options to be available in September.
If you want to take a quick look at the website for The Need To Read, click the link below, but they will be adding to the site all summer, so you may want to return as it develops:

Hello All – Bill Stevenson here. We are setting up another Stevenson User Group that will focus on producing a video every month or so for the people implementing our program. The videos will discuss Stevenson strategies, and as time passes, we will ask for feedback from the group to decide what issues to address. To join, simply email me at [email protected] and very briefly describe the kinds of students you work with and where you are currently in the Stevenson Program.

Five fantastic reasons reasons to always have a set of Stevenson reading books on hand:

1. Help reinforce decoding skills that were taught in the lesson.
2. Build and enhance vocabulary with visuals.
3. Keeps students engaged with fun drawings and a limited amount of words on each page.
4. Confidence booster! Students can read independently while you are teaching another student or group of students.
5. Students can work in teams: One student reads the page on the left and another reads the page on the right, taking turns!

Stevenson uses a unique and fun approach that can be a game changer for struggling readers! 🤾‍♂️🤾‍♀️📚

Many students with reading difficulties are very creative and often visual learners. 🎨🖌The Stevenson program works in a way that builds upon these strengths, increasing retention and decreasing frustration.

Adapting to the Adaptations

We have all had to adapt since the Covid virus struck. Some of the adaptations have been easier than others. Many schools have had to make numerous adaptations, others only a few, but NOTHING has gone smoothly.

Stevenson Learning Skills has adjusted by providing more on-line support with a video on YouTube and activities on a Google site. Also, importantly, many creative teachers have offered excellent suggestions on our Facebook Share Group. You will see these links below. However, we realize that it is just not possible to offer the best help and guidance when we really don’t know what individual teachers are facing in specific circumstances. So

PLEASE CONTACT US

We have a toll-free number and, of course email. Our senior trainer, Nancy Ziehme, can help with classroom activities and set-ups. Dr. Tom Diebold can help with system level implementation and other ideas. General Manager Bill Stevenson (not the author) is happy to answer questions (and none are too simple). Bill would rather talk to teachers than work on business matters. Initial contacts are always free. Some ongoing support may require a fee.

Let us help you adapt.

Do you ever wish you could power teach and help your students make exceptional gains during your instruction time?

We believe you can, through the power of the mnemonics used in our program. Our first major mnemonic introduced at Lesson 7 in the Beginning Level Teacher's Manual unlocks the ability to understand the structure of over 750 words!

That's powerful teaching!

We might be a small program, using a very unique strategy, but it changes lives. Thank you so much to a dedicated teacher for sharing his/her success and the thank you he/she received from a student.

‘I want to share a text message I received this morning from a student’s mom. This student came to me last year right after Christmas break. I was fortunate to have him one-on-one for several months and then in a class of 3. ADHD to the max, but very sweet. He was reading at 0.1 grade equivalent, early kindergarten. He basically knew his alphabet and short vowel sounds but no decoding skills. He was in Stevenson the 2nd semester last year then moved on to another teacher for fourth. She only used Stevenson as a supplement. He & his mom were so excited about the progress he’d made in Stevenson in such short time, she asked me to tutor after school. So this year I’ve seen him twice a week. We made to Lesson 25 in the Blue level with 85-90% mastery before Covid hit. He loves to read, loves to be read to and is currently reading at about a 2.8 grade equivalent. He just finished 4th grade so he’s still behind, but what an exciting improvement.....beginning kindergarten to late 2nd grade in 5 months full instruction and 3 months of tutoring twice a week!! This is NOT an isolated incident. All of my special needs students have grown 18 months to 2 years over one academic year, even in less than ideal circumstances. That’s huge!! My point is I didn’t teach any more diligently or intentionally than I ever have to achieve this level of progress. The difference?? I am equipped with a curriculum that WORKS. Stevenson simply WORKS. I can’t say thank you enough for the curriculum, the training, and the ongoing support. Sorry this is lengthy but my heart is exploding with gratitude! Seriously. I wish I’d had end-of-year standardized assessment to support my claims. Covid prevented that, but I know in my heart and parents know, these past 2 years with Stevenson have been nothing short of miraculous, and “thank you” doesn’t seem adequate. Now here’s the text I want to share.

“Hey Mrs.———-its //////////, ........... ‘s mom. He was wondering if you would be at the school tomorrow. If not could we get your mailing address. He has a thank you card and we can mail it to you. It’s the least we could do for all you have done for him. He thinks the world of you and will never forget you. You taught him to read and thats what he always wished for.”

Everything I work for is in that text........everything! I only wish I had discovered Stevenson years ago.....the students who needed it so desperately! Wow!’

A peek at the fun mnemonics awaiting your students when they use Stevenson Learning. Power up their learning and have fun in your classroom with this unique approach to reading.

Posting an article from Food for Thought, the Stevenson newsletter regarding mnemonics. These mnemonics are what makes Stevenson entirely different from any other reading program and makes learning so much easier and faster and with excellent retention for our students.

The Mnemonic Bridge
We want students to work at a conscious, rather than an automatic level. We all know what it is like to do things automatically, such as drive a car, mow a lawn or wash dishes. When we work at this level, we tend NOT to pay much attention to what we are doing, and we generally do not recall details of our actions afterwards. If you assign ADD/ADHD students work that can be done automatically, you are inviting problems by inviting them to let their attention wander. There are many activities teachers conventionally assign that encourage students to fall into "automatic mode." Writing spelling words five or ten times each is one example. When the Stevenson program presents information, we use mnemonic clues. These clues not only aid memory retrieval, they bring the students up to the conscious level and make them think about what they are trying to learn. When pupils are learning to identify a peanut butter and jelly word, they cannot operate by rote. They are forced to make a connection between the sandwich and the structure of the word. The student's attention is engaged in a way that it is not when he or she is trying to learn a "sight word" on a flash card.

The ultimate goal, of course, is to have the pupils read automatically. We cannot read for pleasure or information very well if we are thinking about the structure of each word. We would take forever to balance a checkbook if we had to think about each facet of each calculation. The way we learn something, however, is not the same way we work with it after we have learned it. you can't LEARN to read if you do not focus attention. The Stevenson mnemonics provide the bridge between conscious level or focused attention and the automatic recall.

A good friend of ours and an excellent practitioner of the Stevenson Program, Cheryl Davila, created the following statement for the close of her e-mails: “If a child cannot learn in the way we teach, we must teach in a way the child can learn.” This thought is so right for teachers who work with struggling students! We credit Cheryl, and, with her permission, we are going to start using these words frequently in our literature.

Dive In and Have Fun
If the Stevenson program is new to you, you are probably taking it in small doses to get used to it, particularly since it is early in the school year. While this is a normal human reaction, we encourage you to dive in. We are always here to help (800-343-1211), and your struggling readers definitely need something that will work. While you don’t want to pressure students who have learning issues, both you and your students will learn a great deal about Stevenson from just doing it. Follow the directions but have fun. If you or your students feel confused, one of two things should happen: you can call us, even with the smallest question, and we will clear things up; or you will find that something that seems confusing one day becomes clear the next.

Congratulations to Lisa Craven on her Globe Teacher of the year award! Lisa has implemented the Stevenson program with a passion over her teaching career. With her permission, we share her favorite quote and her related statement.

" There is no comprehension strategy powerful enough to compensate for the fact that you can't read the words!" Dr. Anita Archer

This quote tugs at my heart because it totally relates to my life's work. Rescuing children who haven't learned to read in early primary years and helping them to become successful readers is my passion. By teaching these struggling children who are visual learners, using their strengths, the rewards are infinite.
