Are you struggling to grow the audience to your podcast? You're posting on all the right platforms and messaged all your friends and family, but after an initial bump of listeners, your growth flatlined.

Sounds familiar?

If so, you need to follow a Value First engagement strategy; here's a summary of what that looks like (we've used this to great effect):
1) assuming you have defined your ideal listener and their niche (an important step that you really can't miss) you need to find the groups they are in, the newsletters they subscribe to, the blogs they read, the podcasts they listen to.
2) join the groups (I'll come back to this in a second)
3) reach out to the hosts/owners of the blogs, podcasts, newsletters etc and pitch them on you guest appearing or writing on their platform; using keyword searching or something more sophisticated (Answer The Public for example) come up with a few specific questions that you can provide expertise on where you're adding value, or making a difference to your listeners. Your podcast may be more on the entertainment side, so think about who you are entertaining - who are your kind of people, what other podcasts/blogs (etc) are they engaged with and what value you could bring to those hosts. Believe me, as a podcast host who relies on guests, I'm always looking for people who will add value to my audience, so anyone who reaches out to me who can provide it will get on my show and get exposure to my audience.

4) on the FB groups, you can add plenty of value without breaking the "no pitching" rules. Join the groups and then become active. Answer questions, participate in discussions, post engaging content... Assuming your banner is optimized and trumpeting your podcast with links, clips, reels etc, people will find your show. It's the know/like/trust factor.

The one challenge is that it takes time. I've recommended at least 20 minutes per day and not to expect results for at least one month. Remember: you are asking for cross-platform behavior which is inconvenient. People listen to podcasts at different parts of their daily lives than when they're scrolling through their social media. But - if you do enough of it, enough people will seek you out, see the link to your podcast and then click on it and hit the subscribe button - even just to bookmark it for later. And that's your listener number up by one. Oh, and it's evergreen because people will search for information or see something you posted days - or even months or years - later, so this really can be the gift that keeps on giving.

Podcasting is the new gold rush! Yes, that’s right! There has never been a better way to communicate with your target clients than through podcasting. And I don’t mean guesting on podcasts. By hosting your own podcast you get the opportunity to talk directly to your ideal future clients week after week about what’s important to them and position yourself as an expert.
Unfortunately, like the gold rush, very few people who host their own podcast actually make any money from it.
They post week after week but never manage to grow past a few dozen listeners, and many eventually give up.

Sound familiar?

Well, it's not their fault. They probably did most of the important stuff right – they just didn’t know secret two…

SECRET TWO
A great podcast needs an engaged audience. Without an engaged audience who knows who you are and are tuning in week after week, your podcast might as well not happen. And getting an engaged audience is actually very simple. You just need to hang out with your audience online and give them value – something we call the Value First methodology. By understanding who your audience is, where they hang out, and then engaging with them, you will create a community of loyal and committed listeners who will find you, stay with you, and then refer others to you.

But this sounds like its going to take a lot of time, right?

Actually, no – which takes us to….

SECRET THREE:
Building your engaged audience doesn’t take a lot of time. In fact, the Value First methodology takes only 20 minutes per day to do right – and if you do this consistently and correctly – every day - for three months, you’ll see your audience figures skyrocket.

How do I know this?

Because this is exactly how I grew my podcast, The Conference Room from zero listeners in December 2020 to becoming a top 0.5% global podcast with over 20,000 listeners per month, and being ranked in the top 10% of most shared podcasts by Spotify for 2022.

But here’s the best part.

My podcast drove six figures of net new revenue (new business sales) into my business in 2022 with an ROI of 9,400%! Yes - for every dollar we spent on the podcast, we earned $94 back.

And all that came from following these strategies.
It didn’t happen instantly, it took months of planning, hard work, trial, error, error, and more error before we finally found a system that worked.

A system that enabled us to create and deliver a podcast to our audience that would attract our ideal clients into our world, and then into our business.
