Because food is life, we celebrated our official one year of living in Portugal by going all out with dim sum, gelato, and pasteis de nata. It's hard to believe that so much time has already passed, because it feels like we've barely begun to explore Portugal. We're excited for all that's to come and really getting to know our new home. Discovering new and delicious foods is what makes our date nights special 🥂!

I never would have imagined, back in 2017 when I first attempted to learn Portuguese on Duolingo in preparation for our trip to Brazil, that I should have studied harder and retained the knowledge 😂😂😂

Now we are falling in love with the Portuguese sounds and people all over again (and trying to remember whether it's "sumo" or "suco"). The reality is: it doesn't matter because we're finding a new and warm family with both the Portugal and the Brazilian Portuguese here 🥰

You really never know where life will take you and how the pieces will end up fitting together, but I count us blessed and always know it will work out the best.

We always enjoy the last bits of sunlight during these short winter days. Kaka loves sunbathing, but there's less opportunity for that now. It's dark and cold when we wake up, and it's dark and cold when we finish working... TBH if we didn't have her, we might never go outside during winter 😅😂

“You can plan a pretty picnic but you can’t predict the weather”.

Before moving to Portugal, we would go hiking regularly with my parents, so we were excited to show them Sintra during their visit. Alas, most of their time in Portugal had rain in the forecast. We decided to risk it on one of the less rainy days and ended up with a rather magically foggy and drizzly day in Cabo da Roca.

They didn’t get the stunning cliffside views and the trail got too slippery to finish, but we ended up enjoying lunch at a spot we would never have gone to otherwise - and I still got to show them the “best cappuccino in Portugal”.

So much in life goes unplanned, but in retrospect it’s always worked out better than we could have planned.

These are the signs of a “matured” relationship:

You don’t have to talk during a meal out: it’s easy to mistaken silence for running out of things to share, but body language and the unspoken take up more of the communication patterns of a relationship that has had time to learn these cues.

You’ve stopped taking photos of yourselves: what was discovery becomes a history that you can trust and rely on. The proof you needed before has simply become evidence between the lines.

Mornings become more romantic than evenings: How you start your days together - or not - can reveal the most about a relationship. If nights are typically associated with passion and impressiveness, then mornings would be more about consideration and honesty.

Living in Portugal has changed us, for the better. In some small ways, like wearing linen or high waisted pants; but also in big ways, like how we perceive time or our own bodies.

Some of it is definitely due to the place, the culture and the people around us. But some of it is also just because this was a new place and that gave us permission and reasons to be different from the people we were before.

For example, we would never do a fashion shoot, much less share it publicly - but here we are and there you go. Hopefully it’s inspired you to consider: what would be different if you were allowed to change?
