Papaw’s Harvest Bees Featured in Clay County Progress!

I’m beyond excited to share that Papaw’s Harvest Bees has been featured in the Clay County Progress newspaper! This special article highlights the rich history and dedication that goes into our beekeeping tradition, passed down through generations.

The story centers on my journey with beekeeping, which I followed in my grandfathers footsteps. Papaw’s beekeeping legacy spans over 60 years. I fondly remember watching my grandfather work the hives and sneaking tastes of honey when he wasn’t looking. These early experiences sparked my interest in beekeeping, leading me to pursue extensive learning and hands-on apprenticeships.

My journey included an apprenticeship with Matt Vanhorn in Cherokee County and beekeeping courses through the Cherokee County Extension Office. My dedication paid off when I received my certification as a beekeeper in North Carolina and as a certified honey producer. Now in my second year, I have expanded my operation from three to twelve hives, producing honey with plans to eventually add comb honey.

The article emphasizes the importance of community support in beekeeping. I want to highlight the invaluable advice and assistance from fellow beekeepers, which helped me navigate the challenges of maintaining hives. My grandfather always said that taking care of bees ensures they will take care of you, underscoring the deep connection between humans and nature.

For those interested in beekeeping, I advise thorough research, utilizing social media, books, and apprenticeships to gain practical experience before starting on your own. It’s essential to understand all aspects of beekeeping, from hive management to the roles of different bees within a colony.

I am grateful for this recognition and for the support of our loyal customers. This feature not only celebrates our journey but also underscores the vital role bees play in our ecosystem.
