: Ghana's Harry Stacey has concluded his debut at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, finishing seventh in the Men's 100m Freestyle event.

Competing in Heat 4, Lane 6, Stacey clocked a time of 51.12 seconds, which falls short of his personal best of 50.57 seconds, achieved at the 26th Easter International Swim Meet in Malta.

A photo exhibition chronicling the historical account of the life and some of the literary works of renowned playwright and pan-Africanist, Efua Theodora Sutherland, has been unveiled at the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park in Accra.

Christened: “Mate Masie”, an adinkra symbol in Akan that means “what I hear, I keep”, the exhibition attracted a number of patrons who were at the park to commemorate the Emancipation Day celebration.

Waist beads, ancient adornments worn around the waist or hips, are deeply significant in various African cultures, symbolizing femininity, sexuality, fertility, and spiritual well-being.

They mark the transition to womanhood, enhance attractiveness, signify fertility, attract suitors, and provide protection during pregnancy.

Waist beads also reflect individual tastes, social status, and cultural identity.

It is one of the elements that express African identity, highlighting the rich traditions of African societies.

In the olden days, drinking water was often sold on the streets of Accra, Ghana, by vendors who carried it in gallons.

These vendors, often women and children, carried buckets or basins filled with water.

Customers would bring their own containers or cups to buy the water.

Then there was also Ice Water.

Vendors would sell chilled water, often referred to as "ice water," especially in hot weather.

King Charles III welcomed the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu III to the Sandringham House in the United Kingdom on Tuesday.

The Asantehene is currently in the UK as part of his Silver Jubilee celebrations, the first visit to the King of England since King Charles III’s coronation in March 2023.

The visit comes as the Asantehene is in the United Kingdom (UK) among others things for a lecture at the British Museum.

Almost two million youth in the country are not in education, employment or training (NEET), the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) has found.

Its annual Household Income and Expenditure Survey (AHIES) indicates that in the third quarter of last year, 1.9 million youth in the country, aged 15 to 35 were NEET.

The number, however, represents a significant decline in the numbers as compared to the same period the previous year.

Mining firm, Newmont has appointed Gifty Omari-Mensah as the new senior scheduling engineer for its Subika underground Mine in Ahafo.

Omari-Mensah is the first female non-expatriate senior scheduling engineer and the first female manager with Subika Underground.

Kenya’s Police Chief Japhet Koome has resigned, following weeks of violent protests against proposed tax hikes in which more than 40 people died.

Human rights groups have accused police of shooting dozens of protestors, some of them fatally, and abducting or arbitrarily arresting hundreds more.

The resignation comes a day after President William Ruto sacked most of his cabinet, following pressure from the protest movement which is largely coordinated online by young Kenyans.

Charles Abani, the UN Resident Coordinator for Ghana, has commended the country for its progress in securing funds through green climate financing to support energy transition projects that reduce carbon emissions.

Ghana's Energy Transition Model, aiming for a net zero target by 2070, is estimated to cost $562 billion.

Mr. Abani made these remarks at the inaugural EV Revolution Africa E-mobility conference and exhibition in Accra on Tuesday, July 9.

He encouraged Ghana to build on its achievements to attract more funding from the global carbon market.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is set to officially introduce Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, known as “NAPO,” as the running mate to their flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for the 2024 general elections today.

The announcement will be held at Kumasi Jubilee Park in the Ashanti Region, the stronghold of the party.

The event is anticipated to gather significant figures within the party, including President Akufo-Addo, the Council of Elders, Members of Parliament, and other key members.

Ghana and Namibia will establish a Bi-National Commission (BNC) to be co-chaired by heads of state, elevating the status of their 30-year-old Permanent Joint Commission for Co-operation (PJCC), according to a communique signed by their foreign ministers in Swakopmund, a port city 360 km. west of the capital, Windhoek.

A Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) was also signed between the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC), and the Namibian International Women’s Peace Centre to cooperate towards improving their technical capacity and for peace support operations and policy research.

The Parliament of Ghana has passed the National Roads Authority Bill, 2023.

The bill, which was passed last Thursday, establishes the National Roads Authority as the unified body responsible for the planning, development, maintenance and management of the national road network in Ghana and to provide for other matters.

The authority will bring three key agencies, namely, the Ghana Highway Authority, the Department of Urban Roads and the Department of Feeder Roads, under a unified authority.

It will also put together the management of national roads in Ghana under a uniform authority, while leaving local roads under the management of the metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies (MMDAs).

If assented to by the President, the Authority will further seek to address the limitations posed by the current structure of the road sector.

Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia has emphasized the need for central banks in Africa to put in more efforts in making mobile money interoperability a reality on the continent.

According to him, this could replace the idea of a single currency which has been on the drawing board for decades due to the inability of various countries to meet the convergence criteria.

Bawumia was speaking at the official opening of the maiden symposium on advancing interoperability in Africa in Accra on Friday.

The US ambassador to Ghana, Virginia Palmer, has lauded Ga Mantse Nii Teiko Tsuru II for his outstanding leadership qualities.

Last Friday, the esteemed diplomat visited the Ga Traditional Council in Accra, where she expressed great satisfaction with Nii Teiko Tsuru II’s efforts to promote unity among the Ga people.

Ambassador Palmer praised the traditional leader for his approach to chieftaincy resolutions and encouraged him to continue fostering collaboration.

The Electoral Commission will reopen the voter register from Wednesday, July 3, to Friday, July 5, 2024, to facilitate voter transfers for those who missed the initial application window.

This decision was made at an Inter Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting on Monday, July 1, 2024.

This reopening will particularly benefit prison inmates, security personnel, and students. The EC will also accept applications for special voting and proxy voting.

The Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) has released a new report outlining growth projections for the country's population.

By 2050, Ghana's population is expected to surge by 70.36 percent, reaching an estimated 52.47 million, compared to 30.83 million in 2021.

The report, titled "Population Projections 2021 - 2050," utilizes data from the 2021 Population and Housing Census as well as historical sources.

It predicts a steady rise over the next decade, with the population reaching 33 million by 2024 and exceeding 44.7 million by 2040.

The IMF has increased its growth forecast for Ghana from 2.8% to 3.1% for 2024.

This adjustment follows the IMF executive board's approval of Ghana's second loan review, allowing a $360 million disbursement.

This brings total disbursements under Ghana's $3 billion bailout to approximately $1.6 billion.

Speaking at a joint IMF/Ministry of Finance news conference in Accra on Monday,IMF mission chief Stéphane Roudet said signs of economic stabilisation are emerging.

The World Data Lab, in partnership with Mastercard Foundation, has launched a digital tool to monitor youth job growth and forecast employment trends in Africa.

At the launch in Accra, the Country Director for Mastercard Foundation, Ghana, Rica Rwigamba, said the Clock aligned with the Foundation’s mission of enabling 30 million young Africans to access dignified and fulfilling work by 2030.

With just 5 years remaining until the deadline of the SDGs and the 2030 Agenda, there have been urgent calls for the world to redouble its efforts to get the 17 Goals back on track.

In line with the UN’s agenda to re-activate the goals, Ghana will organise the SDGs Action Summit from 2nd to 3rd July 2024.

The announcement was made during a press launch on Monday, 24 June 2024, organised by the SDGs Advisory Unit at the Office of the President.

The event unveiled key details of the summit and highlighted its crucial role in advancing sustainable development goals across Africa.

Emmanuel Macron joined several African leaders to kick off a planned $1.1bn project to accelerate vaccine production in Africa, after the COVID-19 pandemic exposed inequalities in access to inoculation.

The launch of the African Vaccine Manufacturing Accelerator at an event in Paris on Thursday will provide financial incentives to boost local vaccine manufacturing in the continent.

The African Union Commission chief Moussa Faki Mahamat welcomed the initiative, saying that it “could become a catalyst for promoting the pharmaceutical industry in Africa and fostering collaboration between member states”.

Fred Kojo Kyeremeh, Founder/Editor

Is the founder and editor of the Ghanaian American Journal. He is an HR practitioner, Entrepreneur, and a 20-year veteran of the Army National Guard who served two tours of duty in Iraq and Kuwait. He was born and raised in Ghana and is a proud Alumni of Opoku Ware School, in Kumasi and Central Connecticut State University where he caught the bug for literature and current affairs.

Fred founded GAJ to give Ghanaians and Africans in general, a platform to document and share their experiences, achievements, and vicissitudes of life in America.

Fred is a former member of the University of Connecticut Veterans Advisory Board and serves on the Board of the Manchester Land Trust.

Fred has received many awards including the National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Connecticut Wartime Veterans Service Medal, CIRC Immigrant Award, and Citation from the Connecticut General Assembly.

Fred lives in Avon, Connecticut with his wife and three children. He enjoys reading, writing, cycling, running, and travelling.
