Oh boy! LOTS of chatter (comments section) on this post elsewhere on Facebook. Hmmmm, acting is part of anchoring IMHO. Connecting with viewers is, too. So, he has those two things down I would think. MY biggest worry: can he write? I do not think every anchor needs to have been a (street) reporter, though there are obvious benefits to that background. This (obviously) pretty man also has to find a way to (quickly) come to know Reno and the surrounding communities and people, though that's a challenge for any and every anchor who ever moves to a new market. Let us not judge too soon --- or, too harshly. https://www.soapoperanetwork.com/2023/06/days-of-our-lives-kyle-lowder-reno-nevada-tv-affiliate-ktvn-morning-news-co-anchor?fbclid=IwAR1YIQUC1QcPlPkMhYUQ-gGgtMRPkX66Sl4EsH0To9NYqFf2Zdfn9rBzYDU

Kyle Lowder is trading in his "Days of our Lives" acting skills for morning news reporting, becoming a co-anchor for the Reno, Nevada TV affiliate KTVN.

And we just want to see our students succeed!... which is what this cast of characters is demonstrating at the 46th Annual EMMY Awards Gala this past Saturday night. Nominees all, it was wonderful to catch up with each.

And then sometimes, one of your broadcast students uses her inquisitive nature and creativity to write a book! Many congratulations to Darian who was interesting and talented back at Emerson College and continues to push her skills set in new and cool ways.

What a great way to start my day! I hired all three of these rookies to be MMJs in our Bangor newsroom. Now all three are based in our Portland newsroom with Sean and Sam serving as our GO-TO fill-in anchors and Hannah leading our "Morning Report" field team. This put an immediate smile on my face and pep in my step. (picture taken in a hurry/flurry off my TV at home)

It's too bad classes are over (well, at least at near to all the semester-based schools) as THIS would make for an interesting discussion. The professional path can be pitted with the strangest things.

This would have been more helpful two years ago this week (beginning of pandemic/lock down), but still a good resource in case you have a blank dance card in the coming weekends--- https://www.poynter.org/business-work/2021/there-are-a-surprising-amount-of-great-journalism-movies-here-are-our-top-25/?utm_source=Poynter+Institute&utm_campaign=4e5c2a8000-03142022+-+The+Poynter+Report&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_26742a15dc-4e5c2a8000-390902876

Most journalism movies, even the ones that aren’t exactly like the day-to-day lives of flesh-and-blood journalists, are still pretty entertaining.

There is a thing in television called a "Q" rating, which is sort of a statistic relating the number of people who recognize you to the number of people who feel favorable about you. --- About the best explanation of the concept I've read. From "Before the Colors Fade," Harry Reasoner (1981).

Always exciting to see a "student" make a leap to a new challenge and a bigger market. I am proud of Hannah and happy for her, too. Also happy to take both ends of the compliment spectrum with which she credits me (second image from her post). ;)

For all my students who complained that I wouldn't give them a "sample" cover letter --> got these two in the past 24 hours from students at the same school. Don't be "this" graduating senior (or ANY job applicant!). Your cover letter is your first opportunity to demonstrate YOUR writing skills. A second grader can cut-and-paste. Faculty friends, feel free to share!

worth a read --> More Stations Produced More Local News Than Ever During 2020 - RTDNA

Despite facing revenue shortfalls, budget cuts and unprecedented operational challenges, local TV stations aired more news in 2020 than ever recorded by the RTDNA newsroom survey. 2020 saw a record amount of local TV news for the second year in a row. In addition, a record number of stations are running local news. Amount of local TV news: 2021 TV News BUsinessA new record of 1,116 TV stations aired local news in 2020, up 18 from last year’s all-time high. 710 stations reported producing news, up 5 including 4 small, independent broadcasters. 406 additional TV stations aired local news, up 13 from 2019. Stations also aired another record amount, in hours, of local news. Increases in weekday news offset slight decreases in weekend news for an overall net gain in average hours of local TV news. 34.5% of TV stations report they increased the amount of news they aired in 2020, 7.3 percentage points more than in 2019.

file under: THERE'S HOPE --> Young Americans Trust Local TV News the Most, According to Harvard Poll
Adweek

Harvard just released a survey on young Americans and their politics. And besides affirming what we already know—they are not too fond of Donald Trump, are generally more left-leaning and believe that Joe Biden won the election fairly—the data has some interesting implications for the media and tech industries. While the study found that 18-29-year-olds are wary of all news sources, they’re still giving local TV stations a chance. About one-third (33%) turn to local TV news, while 30% use Facebook and 27% tune into CNN. A little less than a third (27%) scroll through Instagram to stay informed. Young people are also critical of big tech and support more government regulation—60% of respondents distrust Google either sometimes or all the time, while Amazon came in at 62% and Twitter at 78%. Of 16 major platforms, they ranked Facebook as the least trustworthy.

ENOUGH with the national day for this and the national week for that. It's not even too much of a good thing. It's just stupid.
