Dr. Otis Williams, sole surviving, founding member of the legendary Temptations, turns 82 today!!

Affectionately known as “Dubmeister” by his longtime manager Shelly Berger, and the “Oak” by Smokey Robinson, and “Otis ‘O-Dub’ Williams” by his Temptations’ brothers & band, Otis is “the glue” that has kept The Temptations, one of the longest running American Music Institutions of all time, going for more than 61 years, and counting.

Otis defied all odds, having gone from the dirt roads of rural Texas to the highest heights of the entertainment world and beyond. From award-winning singer, songwriter to critically acclaimed author, from television producer to executive producer of the new album and The Broadway musical, Ain’t Too Proud: The Life and Times of The Temptations, Otis is one of America’s national treasures.

Still performing, Otis, a global superstar is the chief architect of The Temptations’ evolution throughout the 20th and 21st centuries. The Temptations ranked #1 in Billboard magazine’s most recent list of “Greatest R&B/Hip-Hop Artists of All Time,” and “My Girl” was just ranked #3 among Billboard’s 500 Best Pop Songs. R&B History

rhythm and blues, also called rhythm & blues or R&B, term used for several types of postwar African-American popular music, as well as for some white rock music derived from it. The term was coined by Jerry Wexler in 1947, when he was editing the charts at the trade journal Billboard and found that the record companies issuing Black popular music considered the chart names then in use (Harlem Hit Parade, Sepia, Race) to be demeaning. The magazine changed the chart’s name in its June 17, 1949, issue, having used the term rhythm and blues in news articles for the previous two years. Although the records that appeared on Billboard’s rhythm-and-blues chart thereafter were in a variety of different styles, the term was used to encompass a number of contemporary forms that emerged at that time.

Rudolph Isley, a founding member of legendary R&B group The Isley Brothers, died Wednesday morning at the age of 84.

Rudolph founded The Isley Brothers in 1954 with brothers O'Kelly, Ronald and Vernon, although Vernon passed away a few years after their formation. The group had their first hit in 1959 with "Shout," which was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999.

Although the late Queen of Soul is rightly lauded for her spectacular vocals, the acoustic piano intro on this #1 R&B hit was played by Aretha Franklin as well. The gold-selling single was just one of the gems of Aretha’s astonishing ‘70s run of more than a dozen top 10 R&B hits that include “Spanish Harlem,” “Day Dreaming” ‘You’re All I Need to Get By” and “Rock Steady” from 1971-1972 alone.

“Killing Me Softly With His Song”- Roberta Flack January, 1973

Marvin Gaye encouraged Roberta Flack to sing this song live before she’d even recorded it and the audience response was confirmation. It was Flack’s second consecutive Record of the Year Grammy in 1974, after “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” the year before. (She also won for Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female). “Killing” went #1 three times, including for the Fugees in 1996 and as a house remix of the Flack version the same year.

Just spent my ❤️🇺🇸 morning at the movie theater for the premiere viewing nationwide of Sound of Freedom Movie 🎥 🙏🏼😔✝️

I whole heartedly encourage anyone and everyone to please make time to support & see this film … it is destined to be a difference maker as it is a powerful and awakening movie exposing the “pandemic” 😔. In alone it is estimated that between 15,000 to 50,000 and are forced into every year😳😔.

(BOSTON) America’s foremost institution of popular music education, Berklee College of Music, paid loving tribute to legendary singer, songwriter, and pianist Roberta Flack on May 13 with an honorary Doctor of Music degree at the school’s annual commencement ceremony.
