Instagram has announced some new updates for live-streaming, which will make it easier to go live using third-party tools via desktop PCs.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​As per Instagram:

“Now, if you’re a professional account, you can go live on Instagram using streaming software like OBS or Streamlabs through a stream key. We hope this helps broadcasters take their content to the next level and connect with their audiences.”

That could see a lot more creators streaming in the app, with the simplified connection process making it easier to stream high-quality broadcasts in the app.

Creators will now be able to obtain a stream key via the “Create” menu in the desktop version of the app.

“Once you’ve set up your stream to look how you want, start it on your streaming software. Within the Live Producer viewer on instagram.com, you’ll see a preview of what your stream will look like on Instagram Live.”

You can then select “Go Live” and broadcast in the app.

It’s a good update, which as noted, could encourage more creators to stream in the app. And with live streams driving strong engagement, that may well be worth considering in your 2024 planning, with this new connection process providing more considerations for all creators.

Instagram is giving users the capacity to create their own “Add Yours” templates in the app, which will provide another way to spark engagement based on specific, selected parameters.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​As per IG:
“People will be able to develop and share their own custom, meme-able Add Yours templates by pinning GIFs, text, and gallery images to a Story template. Add Yours story templates gives people more ways to express their creativity in Stories and share what’s on their mind with their followers.”

To create an “Add Yours” template, you’ll first add any GIFs, text, or images to your Story that you want to be part of your template. You then select the “Add Yours Templates” from the sticker tray, and choose the elements to pin as part of your template.

You can also use Instagram’s own templates, either as a base or as inspiration, which you can generate by tapping the dice icon at the bottom of the composer screen.

Meta’s announced a heap of new generative AI features for the holidays, including in-stream visual creation options, AI post prompts, expanded availability of its virtual characters, and more.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​Meta’s making its “Imagine” text-to-image tool available in its own app, giving people another way to generate visuals using Meta’s evolving systems. Imagine has been available to selected users within Messenger chats for the last few months, but now, more people will be able to try out Meta’s AI creation tools.

As per Meta:

“We’re expanding access to imagine outside of chats, making it available in the US to start at imagine.meta.com. This standalone experience for creative hobbyists lets you create images with technology from Emu, our image foundation model. While our messaging experience is designed for more playful, back-and-forth interactions, you can now create free images on the web, too.”

Google has published its latest “Year in Search” overview, highlighting the most searched topics across various categories over the past year.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​Google’s annual overview of Search trends provides an interesting summary of the year that was, with Google’s dedicated mini-site providing global and regional insights, as well as interactive displays, games, and more.

As per Google:

“Movie and TV shows captivated audiences this year, with “Barbie” and “The Last of Us” becoming the top trending movie and TV show, globally. They even inspired other top trends: Both “Barbie nails” and “Barbie outfits” were top trending searches in the U.S. in their categories. In fact, this year we were all here for the fashion trends — “it’s giving fashion” was the top trending “it’s giving.”

Google’s overview covers recipes, TV shows, movies, songs, and various other categories. There’s also “Top apparel” and other trending search terms, which could help in your product planning, while you can also filter each list by region, so you can get more local insight into interests.

YouTube’s looking to help creators boost their channel subscriber counts for the holidays, with a new program that will enable creators to gift 10 subscriptions per month to their audience, free of charge.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​As explained by YouTube:

“Starting today, if you’re an eligible creator with channel memberships enabled on your channel, you now get memberships at the start of every month that you can gift to your viewers totally free of charge! This makes it easier for you to drive awareness of your channel memberships perks and give your top fans 1-month of access to things like custom emojis, members-only content, & much more.”

So it’s only a one-month membership, not an annual subscription, but again, the idea is that this will act as enough of an enticement to get these viewers to pay for your channel, kick-starting the member process.

The option is only available to channels that offer a membership tier below $5, so again, it’s really aimed at lower-end, starting out channels, as a means to spark more interest.

Instagram has now added a new, dedicated domain for Threads, separate from Instagram itself, which will make it easier to track referral traffic from your Threads posts.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​nstagram chief Adam Mosseri notes, you’ll now be able to see the specific referral traffic insights from Threads within your analytics app of choice, which, for most of us, will be within your “Acquisition” listings in Google Analytics.

And as more brands look to make Threads a bigger priority, that could become increasingly important in understanding how much focus you should give the app, and how to build the most effective Threads strategy.

Looking to make TikTok a bigger focus of your marketing effort in 2024? TikTok recently partnered with creator intelligence platform CreatorIQ to conduct an analysis of the key factors that make for an effective TikTok promotion.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​The report is broken up into five key pillars of TikTok ads creation, which echo much of the best advice that’s been shared for the platform over time.

CreatorIQ’s five key TikTok marketing notes are:

Grab attention from the start
Foster a personal connection
Show your product in action
Use high-impact creative elements
Close with a clear call to action

As per CreatorIQ:

“The report found that creators overwhelmingly make the best-performing TikTok ads, with recommendations carrying more weight than traditional brand advertisements and celebrity spokespeople. In fact, after watching a creator-driven Spark Ad, 57% of TikTok community members say the creator is trustworthy, 56% say they can trust the brand because the creator shared it, and 71% say creator authenticity led them to buy a product.”

As per Meta:​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​“Beginning in mid-December 2023, you will no longer be able to chat with Facebook accounts on Instagram. Once cross-app communication isn’t available you won’t be able to start new conversations or calls with Facebook accounts from Instagram.”

Meta says that any existing cross-app chats will become read-only, which essentially means that they’ll remain archived, but will no longer be active.

Is this a step back in cross messaging? I guess we will have to wait and see.
