In honor of AANHPI month - I want to share my story about how I took my real name back 🥹 My family immigrated to the states when I was 3 years old, and we attended a school where my siblings and I were the only Asians - so yes, we were bullied left and right for our name, our food, our eyes, and more. At the age of 7/8, our pastor gave us all English names so that we could assimilate quicker. I didn’t realize how much of a toll that would have in my teens…wanting to rid my Korean identity so I could “fit in.” It brings me to tears whenever I think about how much I struggled with my identity. Once I stepped inside my home, I was Korean - only spoke Korean, ate Korean, became Korean…but as soon as I stepped outside my front door, I refused to acknowledge the Soo Youn that lived at home, and only at home. When I turned 21, in the thick of COVID - witnessing all the Asian hate, seeing my grandparents being mistreated for their lack of understanding English, I knew who I needed to be - for myself, for them, for my community! I didn’t ERASE Karen - because she taught me so much and brought me to the place and time where I needed to take back Soo Youn. And my gosh, I am so proud to be Korean, so proud to be Asian, so proud of my heritage/culture, proud of my background, proud of my parents…just so mf proud to be who I am today 🇰🇷 #korean #koreantiktok #aapi #asian
