A tale of 2 seasons at one of the most recognisable landmarks in Western Mass. Growing up, this always served as a reminder that I was home, whether from a trip to the city or up to the beaches in Maine.

I love how the Connecticut and Millers rivers merge at its base, allowing for cool textures in the water & a good spot to go fishing. Truly lucky to have this place so local!

Winters finally here after the Groundhog said it’s here for 6 more weeks. More snow this week too, about dang time.

One of my lucky characteristics is that I’m shockingly great at spotting wildlife roadside while driving. Many times I’ll spot an owl, hawk, coyote, or bear out of the corner of my eye out of pure luck. It’s probably not the safest trait to have but at the same time it makes road trips fun & finding lil guys like this even more fun 🤣

Winter’s fury in black and white. One of my top 5 places to fly the drone in some of my favorite conditions. Will a snowy winter ever return to Western Mass? Who knows.

I have stark memories of waiting for snow days growing up. It feels like every year there were about a dozen sizable snow storms. Memories of winters past fill my mind. As a kid I loved getting school off, riding the bus home for an early dismissal, or waiting up late at night for the snow to start falling, all great memories. Snow-days meant sledding, tons of time outside and pure enjoyment. It’s hard to enjoy winter without snow even now.

Almost that time for the core of the Milkyway Galaxy to return to our early morning skies. One of the coldest but most fun nights, shooting down on the coast of Rhode Island a few years back.

Early season Milkyway photography can be difficult as the core is only visible briefly before sunrise, rising in the southeastern skies. Battling the rising sun, as well as the potential for moisture over the ocean & cold temps present challenges shooting later in the season does not possess. The nice part though, is that light pollution in many areas on the coast of New England is minimal. You’re often facing out into the Atlantic - far from civilization.

Overtime, my perception and feel of this image has changed. When I first processed it - I was very amateur in my photography career & desired contrasty skies that one can only find later on in the summer in truly dark sky locations. I recently returned to these files to give the image a fresh look, to embrace the light coming with the start of the new day and to reflect more on the beauty that occurs when dark fades to light.

Hoping to plan a Milkyway excursion relatively soon. Not sure where but I love capturing the contrast of night on a blanket of white snow.

Snowshoeing through one of my favorite autumn destinations. If you know me, you know fall is always on my mind, no matter the time of year. The vibrant colors, crisp air, and stunning spots like this keep me coming back again and again.

Even with winter in full swing, this place is breathtaking in any season. The chill was manageable, thanks to my Turpin Fleece. As a base layer, it made the 30-degree temps easy to handle, letting me roam freely without needing a bulky jacket. Pair that with a flannel, and winter no longer needs bulky - bland clothing.

I miss when winters were snowy. The cold temps this week & especially this upcoming weekend remind me of when I captured this in the Whites. Had the area to myself that morning. When I left my cheap hotel room, the temperature reading on my car was -25. That lingered for hours after the sun rose.

I hiked about a half mile away from the road to put up the drone briefly to capture this scene. A popular destination in the fall, but so quiet and empty as winter truly showed its power. My face was covered in frost and beard/ eyelashes were frozen after about a 30 minute hiatus from my warm car.

Looking forward to heading north this weekend, but not looking forward to the negative temps.

Cold days without snow < snow days.

Feels like year after year we’re sitting here waiting & hoping that the landscape transforms into a winter wonderland. Maybe someday soon the valley will get some snow. Here’s one of my favorite scenes from my hometown 💚

2024 Brought:

More appreciation for my surroundings (and one of my favorite local subjects Mt. Tom). A reminder to always take the leap. The most incredible astronomical event I’ve experienced to this day and a day that shaped my perception of life. Also a burnt camera sensor, thanks sun!

More owls. Our first moose up in the Great North Woods, an experience I wouldn’t trade for really much else

Nights under the stars in some of my favorite places.

More travels with my best friend and favorite person 🧡

Of course foliage chasing including some new experiences outside of our norm. And a pretty cool comet.

It was a year of change, ups and downs, joy and struggle, but overall gratitude. I’m beyond thankful for where I am, where I’ve been and where I’m going. As cliche as it is, I’m looking forward to the calendar switch and hopefully more opportunities to enjoy the things I love with those I love. I’m a lucky guy, and even luckier to share some of my viewpoint on the world around me with so many.

Have a happy, safe, and successful new year my friends. Remember, take the leap, soak it in, and know that there’s always opportunity out there.

Met this stoic Barred Owl on a random drive about a month ago. It didn’t move for a few minutes, and I questioned if it was real. Completely unfazed by my presence, eventually it shifted its head.

Always have to keep an eye out for these guys, they blend in well this time of year but somehow I’ve seen more and more lately! Wildlife always shows when you’re not looking for it.

Brrrrrr it’s cold. Photography is sure important especially in documenting change. This place has changed immensely over the last few years due to downed trees, flooding and nature running its course.

While it’s still beautiful, I miss when many of the trees were still standing tall not blocking the view of this beauty. I’m hopeful that nature continues to run its course and the unobstructed view of these falls from a distance returns.

Simply moody autumn details. Falling leaves lead to season changes. It’s a great time to reflect, recollect, and cozy in for the next few months.

I’m trying to be more intentional with my work, capturing scenes but telling a story with each and every image. I also want to work to find a way to make “stick season” beautiful, because the browns, greys, and rust last so dang long and I’m sick of being uninspired by it.

Throwing it back to another shot I had envisioned since I first drove by this pond prior to moving to Easthampton. Thankfully I lucked out, got a great morning sky and relatively low fog, conditions I had hoped for about a year prior.

The first image is the cover image of my 2025 Scenes From Western Massachusetts calendar, which highlights some of my favorite places in the 413, and hopefully some of yours as well.

Just a reminder, I’m running a preorder special for 2 more days - so if you want one & can support me it would mean the world!

Link in bio if you’d like to support!
