*Tornadoes, Wind & Hail Possible*

Today’s storms could be different. There is a narrow zone of high wind shear. In particular there are high levels of low level speed shear which is an ingredient for supercells that can produce tornadoes, wind, and large hail. That zone is near the lakeshore. The winds off the lake could enhance that shear and there is plenty of instability (storm fuel) expected to be present as well. It is more uncertain if we will get storms present in this narrow band of high wind shear while it is present. So it is possible that storms never become violent, but that chance is there this afternoon and very early evening. In a nutshell, please stay storm aware this afternoon. Have a severe weather safety plan. Also have at least 2 ways of getting severe weather notifications. Also keep your phones charged. The map below is one of our short term computer models showing the set up at 2pm and the narrow zone of high wind shear circled in red for mid to late afternoon today.

Turning COOLER just in time for back to School?!? A trend toward the upper 70s and low 80s on tap this weekend and early next week!

08/06/2024

Good coverage of showers and storms is expected this afternoon and evening across the area. Storms will have the potential to reach severe limits with all hazards possible including damaging wind gusts, a tornado or two, large hail, and heavy rainfall that could lead to isolated flooding. The main window for activity is from Noon to 10 PM with storms moving into Northwest Ohio and over Lake Erie and moving southeast.

Severe weather possible tomorrow

Good afternoon! While most of us will be dry today (other than a storm or two) we are in for some strong storms through Monday. much of northern Ohio is under a slight risk (level 2 of 5) for severe weather.

Storms will move through late Monday as a cold front sags southeast. With that, showers and storms will be possible, especially Monday evening and into Monday night. The main concern with storms will be damaging winds. Some hail is not out of the question as well.

08/01/2024

Gusty storms for the southeastern half of the area, dry for the northwest half.
Storms may contain wind gusts over 40 mph, small hail and brief heavy rain.
Most intense weather is staying south of us tonight.

Chance of storms will return Friday afternoon & evening.

This Thursday, August 1, 2024 in the Southwestern Atlantic and Eastern Gulf of Mexico, a well-defined tropical wave is producing a large area of disorganized showers and thunderstorms over Hispaniola, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and the adjacent waters of the southwestern Atlantic and northeastern Caribbean Sea. Development of this system should be slow to occur during the next couple of days while it moves west-northwestward over portions of the Greater Antilles. However, environmental conditions are forecast to be more conducive for development after the wave passes the Greater Antilles, and a tropical depression could form this weekend or early next week over the eastern Gulf of Mexico or near the Florida
Peninsula. Interests across the Greater Antilles, the Bahamas, and Florida should continue to monitor the progress of this system. It has a low (20 percent) chance of formation in the next 48 hours and a medium (60 percent) chance in the next 7 days.

The heat dome is showing signs of expanding and moving east once again next week. Highs in the low to middle 90s are possible from Sunday to next Wednesday.

Who is ready for more summer heat? I had a few people tell me last week that they were sad summer is over. It is far from over. Not only is another heat wave possible to finish July, above normal temperatures are favored for both August and September.

07/22/2024

A few days ago, we talked about a flip-flop in the weather pattern. That still appears to be likely as temperature go above average. The end of July into August, of interest is above normal rain and thunderstorms. Also expected …something to watch long term as we could be, in the path of more periodic thunderstorms.

07/18/2024

Dewpoints drop this evening and stay comfortable through the weekend. The normal heat of July returns at the same time as the humidity. ☀️

The heat dome is bouncing away once again, and it won't be making a return for a long while!

A destructive DERECHO confirmed last evening across Iowa, Illinois and Indiana. Multiple tornadoes reported with large swaths of winds reaching 80-100+ mph!

This wind damage stretched for over 500 miles and fortunately dissipated right at the Indiana and Ohio state line.

07/17/2024

We're very lucky that last night's derecho weakened so quickly as it tracked into our area. Damage was widespread across Iowa, Illinois, & Indiana.

As for NW Ohio and SE Michigan, winds still gusted 35-45 mph even after the storms fizzled, and spotty power outages were reported.

07/16/2024

Wow! This line means business!

07/15/2024
07/15/2024

Individual supercells will gradually conceal and form a line, with the southern half parallel to the southwesterlies, and will mature over several hours, developing a comma head book end vortex, real inflow jet, and embedded tornadoes from the apex north to the book end
