Our Story
What TYPO Is About… 8 pages. That’s what TYPO is about. In 1995, I had a notebook full of short stories and poetry. What I didn’t have was an outlet. I had an idea to fold two pages in such a way as to give me an eight page magazine filled with my stuff, my stories, my material, my art. My goodness, I was able to stuff a bunch of stuff into eight pages. Before I knew it, I had packed twelve issues in just a matter of days. But, something wasn’t quite right. I knew people. I knew OF people, people who had written a poem in school or while they went through a rough patch in life, people who had stories to tell, like me, other people who would never have an outlet for many reasons. One reason was because they may only have A poem or A story. Another reason was because, back then, it was a lot harder to get published than it is today in the digital age. That world was just beginning to take shape. Just printing my material felt like just that. I was just printing flyers. I wasn’t actually PUBLISHING anything of merit. I didn’t just want to display my writing. I wanted to publish something that others had a personal stake in as well. I wanted TYPO to be more of a community. I wanted to be part of something larger than myself. I wanted to help other writers, showcase the community. There was never any money in TYPO. That’s one of the reasons there is no paid advertisement. It is truly about the work. I had also written a book. I wanted to publish a different chapter every month, and I did for many years. I figured, hey, if no one else will publish my book, by golly, I’ll just publish it myself, in installments, like a lot of other authors have done! Eight pages… It’s all I could afford, and sometimes, I couldn’t even afford that. I did it anyway, though! My family wouldn’t let me stop. They wouldn’t let me give up. They knew it was important to me, to my well being, to who I really was, a writer, a storyteller. I had to get the stories out one way or another. It kept me sane. It raised me from the drudgery of every day life. These eight pages had to come out every month. I had to take time from the grind to publish this magazine, to work on my craft, to read and collaborate with other creators. It really was about eight pages. Why it’s called, TYPO… There is a very good reason why it is called TYPO. As a matter of fact, over the years I have shared many reasons why I called it TYPO. The absolute truth is… I don’t remember why I called it TYPO. I said that it was because there was always some typo somewhere that got through the editing. I said it was part of a joke, as in, “Make no mistake, this is TYPO Magazine!” The truth is probably because I liked to use different fonts in the title and for the stories, but calling the magazine, Fonts, just didn’t have that zing. I also have a few explanations that are bizarre and arcane and almost certainly made up. How to get involved… If you have something you want to tell other people, a story, a poem, a cartoon, then you can send it to me. You might see it published. I WANT to publish it. Yeah, there’s no pay. You can read it online or get a hard copy. It’s a start. It will get you in that frame of mind. It will get your stuff out there. You will be a published writer or poet. Someone you don’t even know will read your writing, might be inspired by you. You might bring a smile or a tear to someone’s day. That’s all TYPO is about. It’s about human expression, human lives, filled with emotion and strife and yes… lots and lots of typos.
